Are the 5-speed trans the same on the V6 and V8 Explorers? Is one more problematic than the other? Or is it certain years that are more prone to failing? ... Im looking into getting the V8 model, but im concerned about all the failures and horror stories ive read with the transmission.

 

Our 2004 V8 4wd Explorer is dead again, I would never get one of these again.hope it is transfer case this time.
New trans at 52k, $4k
Now at 72k towing it again.

 

Just got the call from our local Transmission place:

Trans is destroyed, full of metal particles.

$3200 for replacement.

 

Thanks, ill probably opt for the 6r60 trans on the Gen4 Explorer, they seem to hold up much better

 

I have a 2002 EXP with the 4.0 motor and 5 speed auto... Change the oil every 40 K miles... Has about 185K miles now.. No problems.. CLEAN OIL is the secret.
