You need to explain this more. Is this a automatic transmission? And the transmission will not shift from low to drive or drive to low? From low to drive doesn't make sense, you have to hit drive first before you can shift to low.

Were you on slick surface and why the 4x4 low setting?
If not on slick surface the drive train binds and why you cant get it out of low or some times 4x4 or unlock the front hubs.
Back in the day before you got on to solid ground you would spin the tires just a little to unload the drive train then you could get it out of low or 4x4 or unlock the hubs.
You can try and spin the tires or unlock the hubs and / or back up and see if that will unload the drive train to get it out of low or 4x4.

dustyroad is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.dustyroad is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
When you stick it into D, are you saying it doesn't shift out of 1st gear at all?
Can you put it in 1 and shift up manually that way? 1>2>D
I'm not the person to be answering transmission questions but more information on exactly what it is doing/not doing
will help the others narrow down the problem for you.

Are the front hubs locked?
If you can jack the front up and make sure the hubs are unlocked as a start. Even better if you can get all 4 wheels in the air solidly.
Once the front axle is free the drive train should not be bound up and the 4x4 lever should move unless there is something else wrong either with the linkage or inside the TF case.
That is where I would start.

Did you see he posted the above?
It sounds like he cant get the 4x4 shifter from low range to high range or out of 4x4 back into 4x2 mode.
I am guessing the drive train is bound up and once un-bound the shifter will move.

Let's get this straight first. You have the engine, then the transmission, and then the transfer case. From what you are saying above, it's the transfer case you are having a problem with. The transfer case bolts onto the back of the transmission.

These shifters like to rust. I would get under there with some good penetrating oil and see if you can free it up. You should be able to get under there and see the shifter, and then the rod that goes back to the transfer case.

As you are messing with it, put blocks in front and behind the wheels so it will not roll, and take the auto trans lever on the column and put it in neutral. You will probably have to turn the key a little bit to move the lever on the column. I would not start the engine.

Ok so from what I've figured out the body is a 85 model f150 4x4 but the engine and transmission are out of a 90s model and the guy I got from is saying it's an aod trans not c6. It will not shift up out of first but will go into overdrive.
