Auto 4wd transmission revs and won’t move

My son has a 2001 f350 7.3 SuperDuty 4wd with an auto tranny. He was driving down the road the other day and when he pressed the fuel it just started to rev and would not go forward like it was out of gear. By the time I got to him, he said he tried to go forward and also reverse and it would not move either way. We towed the truck home and it was just started today and when put in drive it went forward and then in reverse too about 5 or 6 times before doing the same thing it did to him the other day. I cut off the truck and restarted it. When I put it in drive, it went forward and reverse again before doing the same thing. I can cut the engine and restart and it’s like it resets something. I have no experience with diesels. Any thoughts on this 4r100 tranny?

Was that checked with the trans warmed up, in park, and the engine idling?

It could be loose feed bolts. These bolts are between the valve body and the case. They tend to loosen and leak pressure to the clutches. If you remove the pan and the valve body you'll see this.
