1992 F150 Bad Fuel economy?

I have a 92 F150, 302, 4WD, My problem is, I think it is a problem, I only get 12 MPG around town and only about 14 MPG on the Highway, The plugs, wires and distributer are fine. What can I do to improve the milage and does anyone have any solutions if this is low milage? Also the gas gauge seems to drop between starts. Thanks

If if was a 2wd, that'd be a little low, but since it's 4x4, that sounds within the normal range. Also, gas gauges are usually erratic in one way or another, but considering your milage, you may want to check for leaks.
How about air flow. Two places where air flow matters: intake and exhaust. You got a good clean air filter? My favorite is exhaust though. Open it up! Flow is good! Mufflers are an unnecessary nuisance that adds backpressure and robs power and milage. Rip it off and chuck it in your neighbor's yard. Just make sure you don't screw with the cat because those computer controlled vehicles are real tempermental about that.
You could try hotter plugs. Bosch platinums seem to do a lot of good for milage in my case. Make sure you have good spark plug wires as well.
You could always try a different brand of fuel to see if it changes your milage. I've found that in some engines, you get great benefit from Marathon gas. It's a non-ethanol gas, unlike most others that are 10% ethanol. Some engines drink ethanol like it's water.
There's also a ton of other basic things you can do, but I'm gonna stop here and see if anybody else wants to pick up and finish the list.

Whats your axle ratios? They can make a big difference in mileage.

I have a 1989 F-150 4x4 Regular Cab 4x4 with a 302 and AOD tranny with 3.55 gears and I get at best 14mpg on the highway. This is with a almost healthy motor. Do you have any aftermarket mods? How about a tonneau cover/campershell?

I get 12 to 13 miles per gallon, highway or city. Even with the minor mods I did there was no improvement in mileage or power. These trucks are just inherently hard on gas.

'92 F150 XL 4x4, 5.0L AOD, Headers, K&N Air Filter, 3.55 Gears, LT235/75/15 Tires.

I have a '92 F-150 5.0/4x4/E4OD/4.10 with 195K mi. on it. I had hoped for better mileage, but I get 10-11.5 while towing my 5,000 lb. travel trailer, 12-13 mpg in town, and 14-16 mpg highway. I can't really complain, it's just that I used to drive a Subaru.
