F150 4x4 front end lockout?

OK, guys. Coming from a long line of SuperDutys with real hubs and manual transfer cases and unfortunately a few ESOF’s. Just started looking at 150’s to downsize and I notice that the front axle has no hubs. Is this system similar to Chrysler/Jeep front ends with a vacuum disconnect? I was surprised to find I couldn’t order a new truck with a manual transfer case. How long has it been that a 150 could have a manual shifter? I’m considering looking used if there’s such a thing. Since there’s no hubs I’m guessing that the only thing that could go wrong is a vacuum disconnect if in fact that’s the way it works. Or possibly an electronic disconnect? Thanks for all your thoughts.

The last time a F150 had hubs was 1996. From 1997-2003 they had a center axle vacuum disconnect similar to Jeep. From 2004- Current the trucks use independent locking wheel ends known as IWE on each wheel. The last F150 with a manual transfer case was 2010 but that still used IWE's.

Thanks, gashog. Can I assume that in 2H the front driveshaft is not turning with the IWE?

However the IWE's are still controlled via vacuum. No vacuum, they are activated, vacuum on they are disabled.

I liked my 97 Jeep TJ system. Manual transfer case and the front driveshaft turned all of the time. Very little to go wrong. I'm sure it cost fuel economy and that's why we don't have similar systems today.

You can still set your truck up that way with an IWE eliminator. You'll still have to use the electronic **** to select 4hi/lo, but all it will do is shift the transfer case. This gets rid of the part time vacuum hubs. Simple and strong, but there will be a fuel mileage hit.

Thanks for that latest info, guys. I was considering a one piece axle in my YJ and that would make it just like a TJ in that respect. The vacuum went out and I did a Posilok instead. You know I used to think a lot about the front driveshaft turning all the time. But what about the rear, that’s turning all the time and seems to go forever. As far as fuel economy you don’t buy a 4x4 to save gas. Last time I filled the Jeep at Costco it was $1.66/gal. Under 2 bucks and I’ll run the wheels off it.
