New transmission or rebuild advice

Hey guys today wasn’t a good day. Started out with my camper and trailer and got an hour from home when my trans started overheating. Got to 200 so pulled over went to 223 then came back down after a while of waiting. Got on the highway at that point stayed around 170-185. Got off the highway with less than 15 miles to go and it started to get warmer. Got on this windy road that had no turn offs and had no where to pull off when it got close to 200 again. Finally got to a straight spot where we wouldn’t get hit but it was at 215 and right after I stopped to let it cool down (still running in N) it climbed all the way to 253. Fluid everywhere with barely any left in the trans. Was coming out right next to the tc by the looks of it. So going to a shop tomorrow who might be able to help. Trucks still drivable but don’t trust it going far but wondering if I should get a rebuilt one have them rebuild it or wondering if maybe just blocked cooler and TC. All my mods are in my signature. Thanks in advance guys. This really threw me off today and really don’t have the money to spend on a new transmission

Sounds like the front pump seal, often you can just replace the seal and all is well. It happens a lot when people back their trailer up.

I should add that the cooler was cold when it was overheating at 250. So I don’t think it was cooling at all either

Probably the by-pass valve is stuck open.

Yeah it does sound like the bypass is clogged or broken causing it to overheat. Thing is though it was up to 223 and then up to 253 at different times. That would lead me to think that it is probably cooked on the inside now. With my last trans fluid change I did it almost looked like I was changing oil because it was so black. I’m leaning towards a new transmission as we will be headed back to Alaska with it after traveling around the lower 48 and don’t want to get stranded in the middle of no where. Been suggested streetsmart transmission and reading a lot of good reviews on them. $1880 shipped seems to be a good deal. Any input on them?

250° wont damage it, as long as you dont go driving with that temp for a while.

I understand that but with the black fluid and the front seal that now leaks even at normal temperatures it just doesn’t seem like a very good use of money to replace the seal for say $1000 and have the trans die in a couple thousand miles.

How many miles on your truck?

Pretty much the same thing happened to me this past summer, I did a new tranny for the piece of mind.
Any other known issues with the truck?

I don’t have any other problems. I’ve pretty much fixed most the other stuff. I haven’t really had any Major problems. Engine has 125,000 miles on it now. Swapped that in last spring as the other one had lots of blow by. Price quoted from streetsmart they are $1880 not installed but don’t have warranty in Alaska where I live. So looking at other places down here in PA currently waiting for the dealer to give me a call back with their probably crazy price.

You can pay the labor to take out the old unit or possibly pay a mechanic hourly to rebuild plenty of possible surprises that way. I would only advise a rebuild if you are going to do some serious upgrades. When I did mine the rebuild vs replacement. The replacement will also minimize the trucks down time

Front pump seal is $8 and a easy DIY project. You can rent a trans jack and do it in your driveway.

a 3 foot long 1/2” extension and a 19mm impact wobble socket are the only speciality tools needed.
