Charge Indicator

in the attached picture just under the light socket is the charge indicator. The book tells how this works. There is a wire running through a metal loop. The wire is cloth coated and in bad shape. Can I replace this with a new same size stranded wire coated with I think rubber? Will the gauge still work?

If you aren't converting to 12 volt, make sure you use the same gauge wire that was there originally. Also, make sure the wire goes through the loop in the same direction it did originally. If not, the gauge won't work. The diagram , in the article you posted, shows the proper direction of flow. But, to answer your question, yes, a wire with rubber coating will work just fine. The gauge works because the loop picks up the electromagnetic "flow" through it.

Denny’s reply above is correct. If the gauge shows discharge instead of charg you know the wire is going thru the loop in the wrong direction.

Good luck,

Tom

Correct, the gauge is inductive, and senses the current going through the loop.

Yes. The meter uses the Hall Effect principle so there is no electrical connection, and you can use any gauge wire as long as it is the same AWG size or heavier. There is no real need for extra insulation as the new wire insulation will be quite adequate. I'm currently using AWG 6 because of anticipated high loads. What is critical though is the direction the wire passes through the loop. Make sure it goes the same way as the old wire otherwise the meter will read backwards
