88 F250 questions

Hi all,
I'm considering the purchase of an 88 F250 SuperCab 2WD, 460/5spd. It's in excellent cosmetic condition, and according to the seller, runs well. I have 2 questions:
1: The seller says the trans works normally in 1st, 3rd, and 5th but wont go (his words) in 2nd or 4th. I've been all over google and can't find a firm possible culprit. I can get the truck at an excellent price, but don't want to turn right around a drop another $1200 on a reman ZF5. I am mechanically capable, and don't mind going into it but again don't want to nearly double my outlay. Any ideas?
2: This truck rides higher in the back, is this normal for those 2wds , and should I plan on a leveling kit to raise the nose, or is it likely to be weak coils that need replacing?
Thanks for any info!

I would just keep looking and find one that works. I would find a 4x4 as well.
