Anyone Bought a fan clutch lately?

Hi, has anyone bought a fan clutch lately that will actually engage at coolant temp of 225- 235 or 240 degrees? I have not been able to find even a new one that will work..
I only need it when the weather is warm and towing up a real hill . Had a 1986 w/ 6.9 I could hear it come on and see the temp drop right away under same conditions.
Newer unclogged radiator, good fan shroud, fan about 1 1/2" from radiator. Can't figure out why the few I've tried have never engaged.
Thanks---Norm

I use a Horton on my truck, however have you done the spring mod? Shorten the spring a full wrap and that will help.

The Horton is electric and controlled by a sensor or switch.

I bought a Napa years ago and still works great. I pull some REAL loads, not scrap metal to the dump, and my heat gauge will slowly creep up on the long grades, I'll hear the fan come on with a roar and the gauge will slowly creep back down. Mine's been working that way for decades. I remember looking at it closely back then and it sure looked like it was made by the same vendor who furnished the originals to Ford.

I was wondering that too, they're on big diesels but they're thermostatically air powered.

You are welcome, and hopefully they still stock a decent one. Mine was before the common "off shore" parts days.
And living where you live you ought to get a kick out of this heavy towing expert's pearls of wisdom:
once your speed is past 30-ish, the fan is useless anyway, as the wind over the radiator is more than a fan would pull over it. the fan does the most good in stop-and-go traffic, and when just stopped. but even climbing a steep hill at 35, there's plenty of airflow a fan isn't going to make a difference, but water flow sure will!

I also want to know where you got the horton. My newer clutch from NAPA never disengages, really annoying. That said, i still have heat issues.

I googled Horton and then sent them an email. I asked if they had a fan clutch for our rigs and they wrote back not for our application, sooo I guess you have to figure it out yourself how to rig it .??
Sure would like to get something that would work on those rare occasions . Hot out towing a load up a long grade !!!

I made a adapter for mine to install a clutchless fan. Only problem is the fan is so big it hits the upper rad hose. I havent adjusted my upper rad hose yet havent installed it yet.

Norm, you never mentioned if you have an aftermarket turbo or not. If so, more turbo pulling power = more stress on the cooling system and even with a cooling system in perfect condition when pulling long grades in over 100° summer heat towing real heavy the engine would run a little hotter than ideal. What some of us ended up doing was buying the black trim strip and cutting out air holes in the front bumper like the '92 or '93 and up F250's have. That much more air being drawn through the radiator made a noticeable difference.
