Wonder why you're having so much trouble. My Napa one has been working fine since about '95 with somewhere around 200,000 miles on it. Actually there wasn't anything wrong with my factory original as it turned out, but that's another story. Got the original stored in the old Napa box, just looked and the Napa # on the box is 273399 if that helps.
On Edit: Napaonline shows the number is still good and the pic shows it's the right one.

They started using these electric over hydraulic fan clutches in the early 2000's on cummins common rails and 6.0 powerstrokes.

The wire sits in front of the fan and has a brace kind of built around it. You fasten it to the rad or shroud, but they do come loose over time and can get cut.

I still don't get how Horton fan clutch works. How does it not spin the wire ? It Screws on with the LH nut on the water pump like the stock one, right?.

My '84 was like how the OP stated from the sounds of it. Normal driving around or hauling normal loads I didn't notice the fan engaging. But with a heavy load and some serious grades you could tell by the temp gauge when the fan would kick in and when it would kick out. And you heard it clearly, it was quite a roar.

The air controlled ones on a big Cummins and Detroit Diesel have a base that's solid mounted to the front of the engine with the fan spinning off the base (like the water pump in an IDI). The air line controlling the fan is connected to the base. An electrically controlled Horton is probably designed the same so it seems doubtful there's one made for an IDI. Used to work on a lot of DT466's and unless they've changed, as far as I remember they have a fan clutch like an IDI.

Hairyboxnoodle posted that" pirate 4x4" post that was informative. I think this Horton would work if you could make enough room behind the radiator .I called around ,New they are about $900-$1000 with the harness and sensors . Horton 996127 is just the clutch , 996128 comes with the extras. I'd like to just get a stock one that would actually work.
