1987 Ford f250 rear axle swap. 10.25 for 10.50

Can I swap a 10.25 for a 10.50? My rear end is completely done. I have a really good deal on a 10.50 Sterling with rear disk. I know the wheel bolt pattern is different. Can it swap out without any problems?

There are so many varibles here I would suggest not doing it. One of the major differences will be the ujoint in an '87 is a 1330F and the 10.5 will be 1350 , flange or possibly a 1410.
No, the yokes won't swap.

Anything is doable but the question is why make more pain than necessary. Lots of other rear ends available that will be a straight forward swap.

When did the 10.25 change joints? My '90 had a 1350 on the 10.25 SRW, as did the '94 10.25 DRW I just put in. Or is this an F250 vs F350 thing?

I always figured in '93 when they updated the yoke to the longer style.I had to use a conversion u-joint when I swapped in a 1st gen sterling (pre-'93) DRW in place of a 2nd gen ('93+) SRW.Your post killed my theory lol.

I know the wheel bolt pattern is different.
All 1953/96 F250's, 1967/97 F350's, 1997 F250 H/D's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

1999 was the first year that F250/350's have metric wheels. Officially, there are no 1998 F250 H/D's & F350's, Ford just carried over the 1997's.

Rear end swap

The main reason I wanted that rear end was rear disc brakes. Which would be nice

From everything I have seen it’s a manual vs auto, auto usually got 1330 and manual got a 1350, I’m sure there is some exceptions to this.

You can bolt in an axle up to probably 2019 (2016 for sure) but there is different versions of the 10.5 axle.

99-04 just changed to metric bolt pattern, everything else is the same.
05-10 use a different offset, each side sticks out ~2” and the rim is offset to account for this. Also the abs sensor (also the vss) changed and you will need to reuse the one from your truck.
11-12 are the same as the 05-10 but they went to 4 channel abs so there is no tone ring or vss sensor in the pumpkin.
13-16+ got bigger brakes over the 11-12.

All of these will bolt in and work but you will need to figure out what to do for the abs sensor on some of the axles and you will need the correct companion flange to match your driveshaft u-joint.

Note 2011+ had the option of electric locker in the rear, this can be put into any sterling axle from 85/86 to 2016.

Rear end swap

The gentleman told he has 2000 10:25 sterling with rear disc. Did Ford make a 10:25 in 2000?

All the info in post #8 still applies. They are basically the same rear end.The sterling 10.25 to the 10.50 is sorta like the E4OD auto trans is to the 4R100.One is an updated version over the other and the updated versions (in some situations) can be used in place of the older versions,so long as you know what the differences are and the needed changes to make them work.

All you need to do is pull the info from post 8 that applies to you:
