DIY back lash adjustment

Had my rear end rebuilt” After the truck would roll a little when put in park. Yesterday when I was doing the rear drivers side axle seal the oil was silver metallic with 40 k on the rebuild. Despite thinking everything was ok as the magnet was not too bad when I would top up the fluid. I am confident this wear is caused by excessive backlash. I have the dial indicator yet do not want to put the truck at risk from making s mistake.

I would be concerned about the whole Ring & Pinion Assy.condition,Its going to take a great effort to learn about procedures & im sure any of us is capable of,but not many will put out the effort for a possibly one time fix.

It's full of metal. It's done. The metal has made its way through all of the bearings and has destroyed them. If you have excessive backlash and you didn't before, then that means that it's shot. The only way to do it "right" as you stated you wanted to do is completely go through it clean out all the metal and start over again. Backlash in itself is not going to cause silver colored oil. There has been a bearing failure

Here are a few photos I wish inhad
some with the metal pieces from last night I wiped the hub and the rag became shiny.

Timken brand bearing may not be original.

There were heavy metal shavings both bearings appeared fine

Fluid looked dark not nearly the amount and size of shavings present in the outer axle. Maybe the shavings were part of the seal?

If you had new gears installed the the gear oil is going to be dark and have some metal dust in it, that is from the gears breaking in. You are supposed to change the gear oil 500-1000 miles after you put new gears in. Backlash is easy to measure with a dial indicator it. On a Ford 10.5 .010-.016" is within spec.

I forgot to mention some of the movement in your video is not in the rear end. There is also movement in the tranny and rest of the drive train

Does it make noise? If not, button it up, fill it up and drive. Serving suggestion.

Do not attempt adjustment at this point. The motion in your video is normal. If they made it so it locked up tight, stuff would break.

They only replaced the bearings, the truck did not move that much before the work (new transmission, drive shaft, and rear end rebuild) on my other cars when I put it in park they barely move a half an inch. There is a clunk when accelerating sometimes idk if it’s the rear end or the slip yolk. The truck is re assembled now and appears fine. As for all the metal shavings I didn’t get a photo of My friend and me are confident the mechanic just didn’t care about cleaning out all the old metal shaving besause he’s a real pro

Is the rear axle making noticeable noise when you are driving the truck?
To test for noise, just let go of the accelerator pedal at different speeds and listen if the rear axle noise stops or changes noticeably?

The amount it rocks looks about normal to me. There's play in the diff carrier, ring & pinion, & transmission, plus spring flex. If it's 4x4 there's also play in the T-case. Big tires will make the play more exaggerated. If it has lift blocks or soft springs you'll also get increased spring flex.

You say there's metal in the oil and none on the magnet; where did the non-ferrous metal come from?!? I can't think of any non-ferrous metal friction parts in an axle. I've seen some lubes that look like they have metal in them so it could be some goofy oil the shop used.

I tried the let off test and will try it on the highway today there was no noise at low speed The only time it clunks is when accelerating from a stop. The magnet had some metal on it, however the amount of metal in the hub was far more than the magnet. I was using a pick to scrape the corners as it was loaded up in the hub. Previously the pinion bearing fully failed and maybe the metal was from that. The guy that did it is an idiot that brags he does 15k oil changes on his 6.4 and poisoned my family with beliefs you don’t need maintenance!!! Had to tell em when your current car and the next one is garbage I’ll have the 7.3, a boat and 911 running strong! (Thankfully after enough ballistic yelling at them they don’t go to that guy any more work. A man can can only here you didn’t go to school for mechanics so you don’t know so many times. Time to get to work w my degrees in psychology, bio, and public health lol 2 Yamaha 350s are awaiting service and sea trial!

You're in the back rear right? And if I have my bearings straight you had that toasted oil slinger in there? The rear provides the lube for the hub bearings but I don't know how much oil flows the other direction. Is it possible that the metal you found in the hub came from that oil slinger and your carrier is fine?
