newbie questions gen 3 van

So I find myself looking throughout forums trying to find OEM part numbers? Is there a better place?
Need starter, consensus seems to be to stay away from reman. OK, preference for Motorcraft versus particular aftermarket. Don't need anything amazing, but reliable. All warm weather starts. i-6 300, 1989 ford van.

Thx

I find RockAuto's online catalog a good source for mostly part numbers, I buy little to nothing from them though. Once I know the Motorcraft part number its off to Amazon, eBay and sometimes a general Google search for that number. For new or reman'd parts Motorcraft is as good as we can hope for.

IF you look around your area a dedicated alternator/starter rebuilder might be found. Some who's trusted by big truck, ambulance or other severe duty fleets, someone who actually does the rebuilding and not just a parts exchange outfit. In my area there is such a guy and he's amazing---sadly a bit of a dying breed I'm afraid.

I've also used NAPA but only their "better" line of parts---not that crap they sell to those who'd shop at AutoZone etc. With the lifetime guarantee and general reliability its a good source of quality parts.

newbie question #2, anyway I can pull the color code of my paint from the vin. Yes it's white, but maybe there is more than one white in 1989? Thanks everybody.

Open up the drivers door and there should be a VIN decal.

Here's the decal from one of my old parts vans. I circled the paint code.

Yours could be a single letter, A letter and a # or just a number. If you find your code I can tell you what color it is.

9M is your paint code:

Touch Up Paint and accessories | AutomotiveTouchup (enter the year and make of your car, then it will show a list of the paints and you'll see 9M - White)

more newbie questions..
  1. S Florida rain today, had water puddling on the floor by both the driver and passenger side seats. Van sitting in driveway. Drivers side worse than passenger side. looks like it was coming in from the front (windshield) behind the dash to the floor. Drat. Gonna try to see what I can caulk.
  2. Confused about starter motors. I see motorcraft replacement model
     remanufactured. remanufactured.
. Motorcraft SA769ARM Remanufactured Starter, but also see new ones that fit my van for less from
    Bosch Bosch
(who does the electrics in all my VW daily drivers for the past 40 years. Better rebuild or new? none of them see to have specs in terms of cranking power
Thanks!
