Heater problem

I just bought an 89 Bronco w/ a 302 and the heater doesn't work. It comes out a very little on defrost. How can I determine what the problem is?

Get yourself a haynes or chiltons manual. it will be one of the best investments you could make. it will show you what your asking and then some.

Is it that there is little to no air flow or just no heat?

Very little air flow, which makes for virtually no heat.

Bad motor

I just replaced my heater motor, had same symptoms.

Now, I have lots of heat and needed it! (I live in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and it's already hitting the mid 20's at night!)

But to add to this thread, I only have a high speed. Anyone know why the other 2 lower speeds won't work?

Freeleonard & madmoose (sounds like a really wild comedy act),

You are most likely dealing with two different problems.

Freeleonard,

Yours is more than likely a filthy or dying blower motor. Turn the blower setting to high & under the hood on the passenger side between the fender and the A/C condenser there is the blower motor. If its alive but moving slowly it should be getting pretty warm (hot to the touch) after a few minutes. If its dead...well...dead things don't move much at all in my own personal experience. (I used to own several hearses and they were the closest thing to moving dead things I've ever seen). You can try removing it and cleaning it but its probably easier in the long run to just replace it.

Madmoose,

Your problem is slightly more complicated. The symptoms would lead one to believe that the resistor pack that controls the lower speed settings for the blower motor has fried, melted down, (died). These are not readily available components as I recall. Usually requires a trip to the local boneyard in search of the little bugger. Can be from any F-series/Bronco of similar vintage. Do a search of the forum. It seems to me that there was a thread at one time that included a photo of the part in question. I don't recall WHO or the NAME of the thread but a search may help.

Best of luck to both of you and should you decide to tour with the act, let us all know. Sorry guys, I'm really slap-happy this evening.
