256 with 272 heads
I acquired a 56 F100 frame with a Y block engine. The VIN (F10V6Axxxxx) on frame indicates it a 56 with a 272, 2V built in Atlanta. Checking casting number on the block indicates a 256 (EBY) the head casting number indicates 272 (ECZ-C). I pulled out distributor and it has 14 teeth on gear and is a hex drive shaft. Could this be a 272 engine from the factory with the 256 block (Ford boring extra 256 blocks) or did someone down the line put 272 heads (perhaps original to the 272 engine truck) onto a 256 block? Would dropping the oil pan help ID or will pulling the cylinder heads checking cylinder bore?

it’s not really, just trying to make it sound better. It’s a Barret Jackson trick. Now I just need to find two people on the internet to agree and it becomes fact👍

1956 LT 272 ENGINE
1955 production saw a running change from 256 to 272 (it seems). If the engine came from a bare frame (w/o RATING PLATE), it will be hard to tell what it's build/service history is. If FORD did use a 256 block in 1956, there would be a PRODUCTION SERVICE LETTER describing it.
EDIT- 07-22-2019 - 0341 HRS
The 272 was introduced to truck in 1956. Early 272 production used the previous year 256CI block EBY.
FYB is a continuous learning project. Sorry for any confusion.
EDIT - 2ND 04-09-2019
Let me try this again.
The EBY was the 54 MERC 256. The TRUCK 256 was the EBZ. (1954 PASS CAR 239 EBU - 1954-55 TRUCK 239 EBV)
ECG was the 1956 272.
How a 56 PU came through with an EBY 1954 256 block is puzzling. But I have read more descriptions with this claim so there has to be something to it. If the answer is anywhere, it will be in a PRODUCTION SERVICE LETTER of the period.
One would have to take one that has not been molested and put it on a forensics bench. Date and Foundry Codes will also have to be known.
