Watched an interview on one of the financial channels and the subject came up about how long it would be before electric and/or hybrid vehicles would make up any substantial percentage of total vehicle population world-wide, and everybody agreed: decades. A number that I found surprising was there's about 3 billion vehicles on the road around the world today - about a million are hybrid or electric... WoW...

However, how long until EV's are say 25% of all NEW vehicles sold? 50%? 75%? I don't think it's going to be decades for that. I think it's coming quicker than most people anticipate.

Depending on the political party affiliation that is in power EV use could be pushed faster as could self driving cars. The government could force dino fuelled cars off of certain travel lanes, increase taxes and emission requirements to the point where all but a few will still be on the road.
When it comes to trailer towing and long distance driving a dino fuelled engine has the advantage. When the perpetual recharged fuel cell comes into existence the oil companies will be finding other endeavors. I envision a vehicle with two separate battery banks, one being charged by solar and wheel spin while the other drains, at a certain point the roles reverse and the depleted bank charges.

Tesla's have already been used in luxury fleets (ie limo services) along side Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, and other competing and comparatively priced models. These fleets have reported a drastic reduction in cost-per-mile with the Tesla vs the others when everything is considered: fuel costs, maintenance, repairs, etc. Some of those same fleets have reported Tesla's with the original battery packs going 300,000+ miles and still maintaining very healthy charge capacities. So there's that too.
