F600 Diesel Conversion

I want to swap in an International dt466 into an F600 with a 435 trans. Will the 6.33 rear end be a problem because its used on the old 330md gas motor, I dont want to be stuck going 35mph when towing heavier loads. I want at least 65mph max so i can get ok mpg when towing at 55.

Welcome to FTE.

8.25x20 tires are around 38" in diameter, maybe 39 depending on tread etc. So, going with 39, with your 6.33 ratio and the 1:1 4th gear, at 65 MPH you would be running about 3545 RPM.

The newest DT466 is governed at 2400 RPM which will give you 44 MPH.

One "easy" fix for this is to bring axles (and the transmission, that 435 will cripple a motor with such a narrow powerband) along with the motor. Later model axles will have better, bigger brakes you can get parts for and fit tubeless type wheels without a nationwide search.

Serving suggestion.

so what size diff should be good? Upper 4s or maybe in the 5s. I want to maximize wheel torque for towing, while not being ridiculously high in rpms.

You need to figure out which DT466 you are going to use and the preferred cruise rpm for that engine. And what transmission you will use, and what tire you will use? Are you going to stick with tube type tires in 8.25x20, which I assume is the OEM tire for that truck? What wheels do you have?

You are going to have to do a powertrain swap/update, along with fuel, cooling, controls and other "little things". So before you make an axle change, you need to sort out the other details.

The NP435 won't work with a DT466. You will need a medium duty transmission and convert to a push pull dual disc clutch setup or use a allison transmission.

Find yourself a retired school bus out of the early 90's. That would be pre electronics. That would give you the running gear to work with that would work with the DT. Most were gear for about 65. How close it would all fit a Ford frame?? A little time and a tape measure will answer most of those questions.

Not a bad idea, but I'd bet the running gear would be pretty HD. I poked around on some school bus forums, looks like a 4.44 or 4.78 axle with 11rx22.5 tires is part of the formula.

Example:

Dt466 rpm - School Bus Conversion Resources

IMO F600 might look a little "Hot Wheelish" on 11rx22.5s......

Sounds about right. Most will have an allison behind them but on the rare occasion you can find one with a gear box. That might be a better transmission choice considering the engine is going to be inside the cab. The shiftier for a manual probably would be back close to the rear cab wall. At least with the auto it would be cable shift. Actually it probably would be easier to mount the Ford body onto the bus frame. If one could find a 30 passenger size bus the frame would not be so long that you could probably mount a flat bed on it with out having to cut it down in size. At least you could move up 30 years or more on brake technology tire sizes etc. The diesel is going to require a larger radiator for cooling and a heavier front axle just to hold it up. All that would all ready be engineered into the bus frame.
