Hello All....
This is my first real post..... Figured I would just jump right in......LOL.
I just got myself a new project last Friday. This is going to be my restoration project. BUT FIRST... I wanted to familiarize myself with some of the factory nuances of this year model.
She is a 1978, F150, Custom, 302V8, 3 Spd standard, LWB........
My question is this...... were there some truck released from the factory with both fuel tank doors but no second tank?
Mine has a rear fuel door but no 2nd tank.....
IS this something that could have come from the factory OR was my truck Bubba'd and the rear tank removed?
The rear door is there but seems to be permanently closed off by a latch or something from the back side.

Is this normal?
Thanks,

I can't say for certain if they ever came like that but it would be strange. More likely that someone removed the rear tank or the bed came off a truck that had two tanks and two fuel doors. If it had a rear tank at one time you should be able to find some evidence of it. Do you have a "front/rear" fuel tank selector switch in dash? That would be a good clue.
10-4....
The bed seems to be original to the truck.....
There is no tank switch on the dash.....
No tank (at the rear).
The thing that confuses me... is that the door is latched tight against the body...... like the factory used a LWB bed that was supposed be for a dual tank system????
Sorry for the poor pics, it has been raining here and I haven't had a chance to get any good pics....
Here is a shot that shows the location of the only tank filler door. I am pretty sure it is in it's correct location.
When I first saw the truck, I thought it had dual gas tanks but I couldn't open the filler door on the rear location. Then I looked inside the rear wheel well and there is no filler neck and no rear tank.
Where is the filler door for the front tank? Is there one there and I just can't see it because of the way the picture was taken?

Red Mercury,
As you can see in the latest pic the rear fuel door has magically been transformed to the front fuel door. You'd think a person would have better things to do than prank a Ford truck forum.
No fuel tank selector switch in heater control panel, no fuel tank selector valve & solenoid assy on cross member, no aft axle fuel tank.
Truck only came with what was standard equipment: Mid-ship fuel tank.
Truck with one fuel tank would not have come from the factory with dual fuel doors.
One of two things has occurred:
The bed was swapped or the left quarter panel was replaced and whoever did it used a panel with dual fuel doors.
One possible reason why: The left quarter panel w/a single fuel door (D7TZ-9927841-B) was on back order, so the body shop used one with dual fuel doors (D7TZ-9927841-D).
Sorry if I seem like I was pranking..... I din't mean to mislead anyone.....
I was just curious more than anything about a factory practice......
Maybe the dealership took the tank out for the owner or something.... but the old man that originally owned this truck would have never done anything like this on his own.....
The main fuel cell in the truck now is the forward fuel cell...... Here it is....
The above fuel tank is connected to the front fuel filler door....
SO.....
One other question if y'all don't mind.
Would a single fuel tank on a truck from the factory normally have been located in position where the filler door would have been in the front of the rear wheel or behind the rear wheel?
A truck with a single fuel tank would not have come from the factory with dual fuel doors.

Thanks for your answer.....
I did now want to confuse or mess with anyone's mind here.....
I know which dealership this truck came from originally and the guy that owned that dealership would do some crazy things at times...... SO... he might have had something to do with this issue.
His customer might have ordered a truck with only one tank and to fix the situation.... HE might have done this.....LOL. He was prone to doing things like this.
Anyway, I was just wondering if the factory only had one LWB bed .... and this was it..... Thanks for showing me the light. Ford would NOT do this...
BUT, It sure would be nice to have that second fuel cell.....
