HELP! Are ALL 1976 F250's Highboys?

I am about to purchase a 1976 F250, the owner claims its a highboy but the gas tank is by the rear wheel, not the cab.

I thought all highboys had the gas tank at the cab..... are ALL 1976 F250s true highboys or were there different models.

Thanks for your help! Looking for the facts on this, not guesses or opinions.

Yes all f250s from 73-77.5 are Highboy's.

This tank could've been moved to the bed. It could be a frame swap, many things could have happened.

What does the VIN on the frame say? What does the VIN on the door say? What does the VIN on the title say?

Is the transfer case divorced? Because Highboy's have a divorced transfer case

Pics are helpful the FTE community can tell you pretty quick if it's a Highboy. You can have the VIN decoded pretty quick too

If its a 76 tank should be in the cab. Either they dont know what year it is or its got a different body on it. Check vin number and title. If its a "Highboy" it would had a divorced transfer case.

All high boys have the seat tank. the bed tank was an option in some years I think. though my '76 high boy XLT has about every option you could get but no bed tank .

So the cab has been changed or the hole has been welded in. or it's not a '76.

check the serial number, does it have the narrow frame ? positive arc front springs and divorced transfer case ?

thanks! I am purchasing only from photos and the info provided, It does have the VIN and title, the owner did a lot of work restoring the truck but Im just trying to get independent verification.

Here is the listing with photos, if its still active. Im sure there are some eagle eyes on these forums who can tell me for sure what year this is, I pick up the truck this week.

(it does have the 78 front grille, I already asked him about that).

F26 - 76 4wd f250
Y - 360 V8 2bbl
R - built in San Jose
C53188 - 1976

So the door VIN is from a Highboy but he has no shots of the drivetrain so can't tell if the transfer case is divorced or not.

Again you need to make sure the FRAME vin matches the door vin.

And yes it's had a 79 grill swap... I'd swap it back if it were me.

the vin does decode to 1976 F-250 4x4...but the picture of the VIN plate looks newly reproduced so i would be interested if it matched the frame VIN...the vin also decoded to 360 engine, the ad claims it is a 390 (which is totally possible considering it was rebuilt...

On second look I can MAYBE see the bottom of an NP205 sticking down in one of the pics, but the 4x4 shifter looks weirdly stubby.

Yes it came from the factory with a 360... he says a rebuilt 390 so either it's had a swap, he rebuilt it INTO a 390 or he's lying because from the outside the 390 and 360 look identical. Only way to tell is remove a sparkplug and measure bore stroke

Look at the frame the cross member and the piece between the frame rail in the front,That says 73 to early 77 to me.The shifter looks short because of the body lift guessing but looks to be about three inches

Warranty Number: F26YRC53188 / WB: 133 / COLOR: S / TYPE/GVW: F262 / BODY: EB4 / TRANS: G / AXLE: 24J / MAX GVW LBS: 07700 / YEAR: 1976 / DSO: 747339
F26 = F250 4WD Pickup.

Y = 360 2V

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.

C53188 = 1976.

133" Wheelbase.

S = Bright Dark Blue Metallic.

F262 = F250 4WD Pickup, 7700 lbs. GVWR

EB4: EB = Blue all Vinyl / 4 = Styleside pickup.

G = C6 Automatic Transmission.

24J: 24 = Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.10-1 / 5,300 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity // J = Power Steering.

7,700 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

1976.

747339:

74 = Seattle WA Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

7399 = Domestic Special Order number, truck ordered special by the original purchaser, not "bought off the lot."

18 grand is a lot of money for a truck that has been modified from its original appearance.

Its many mods include: 1978/79 grille swap, aft axle fuel tank with fuel door, redone interior, aftermarket chrome wheels.

Truck was blue originally, not red. No fuel doors until 1977, so it's possible the bed was swapped.

360/390 share the same block, the bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different. Measure the stroke to verify engine size. 360 = 3.50" .. 390 = 3.78."

1968/76 F100/250 4WD: Only V8 factory installed: 360 2V

Warranty Plate appears to be a Marti reproduction. Verify that the hidden frame VIN matches the VIN on the title. FoMoCo said: Warranty Number (on plate) not used for title or registration purposes.

On sale day, 360's magically become 390's! Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer, as it reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO.

And: Do not believe a single word that a private seller claims, as they lie just like used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.

The bed is not original either. 76 had just a gas cap no fuel door.

My guess is it's a '76 frame with a body off a 78-79. the transfer case shifter has been shortened.

the engine size really doesn't matter originality ceased to be a factor a long time ago on this rig. .. at least it's still an FE that's good.

If you really want a high boy keep looking this rig is an abortion. but if you just want a 73-79 Ford that is a collection of all those years this one looks like it would make a good driver.

flowney is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
At this price point, you might do well to hire a qualified local inspector to examine this vehicle. The folks at Hagarty classic car insurance may be able to help find such a person as might folks on the Hemmings site.

I like the '79 grille. This is a popular swap/upgrade.

The VIN on the frame is critical. Anyone can order a new warranty plate from Marti with whatever data they request. Not a reliable data point.

It would be hard to buy a vehicle just from photo and owner description. Pictures always make things look better then they are. It does look like someone put some time and money into that truck. I see alot of these truck selling in the 20k range now that are in less condition. Hard for me to believe what these truck are going from now days. I see alot of junk for $5000 that is nowhere near road worthy. I remember 15yrs ago when I first started buying these trucks $2000 could buy a pretty decent rig. They went from being just an old truck to a classic collector sense then. This truck looks like a great truck to buy and use and enjoy. Never going to be a 200k hemi cuda type vehicle so enjoy it for what it is a driver nice weekend local car show truck. If I bought it id take the body lift off. Not sure why they put that on to run what looks like 33 tires.
