AOD trans in a 1970 F100.

Has any one put an AOD trans in a 1970 F100? I am considering doing so. Any help would be appreciated.

Should be doable. Just need to get a cable to actuate it properly. Plenty of Youtube videos showing how to set it up correctly.

At the least, select an '88 to '93 unit from a truck or a V8. Early boxes are trouble. Ford fiddled with the transmission over it's life and '88 to '93 are the best. You can have them beefed with AODE and 4R70W parts, or if you like, move up to a 4R70W and get an aftermarket controller.

As indicated, the Throttle Valve (TV) cable/linkage is critical. It's not like a C4/C6 kickdown, and as said lots of adjustment info is available on line.

You need a speedometer cable that goes from old Ford speedo to AOD. Lokar has them. I used a new flex plate and dust shield because the starter hole is in slightly different location. I also bought a PTI 10" converter and a TCI control valve that has constant pressure because of the horror stories about improper ATV cable adjustments causing transmission failures. There is a B&M shift lever you need to be able to use an after market shifter and a carb throttle spring return and a throttle kit from Lokar that has the bracket for the ATV cable and the right symmetry for the AOD.

I am still painting so I haven.t put the engine an trans back in yet, but it is all bolted together on the garage floor.

It's a very straight forward swap.

You didn't mention what trans you currently have, but if you have a C4, it's ALMOST a bolt-in.

Here's how I did it

Thanks Freightrain,
It has a 3 speed manual now. The hump looks pretty low so I just bought a high hump in case.
Will go with Performance Automatic Street Smart Kit for FE. Expensive but looks like it should bolt up to my 427 FE.

I put a B&M shift kit in it myself a couple years ago. Helped it behave better and shift more consistently

Have somewhere around 80,000 miles on the trans by now. Lots of highway miles, Lots of towing, lots of stoplight drag races... it hasn't missed a beat yet.

I finally changed the fluid in it a few months ago around the 70k mile mark

An AOD won't bolt up to an FE without an adaptor. $800+. And for a 427 you need a custom performance transmission.

I missed the 427 part...

So my question now is, why????

AOD works good enough for a driver, but it's FAR from a performance tranny.

If you're gonna spend $1000 on an adapter, why not get something better???

Ready to go for the FE, just $4830:

Performance Automatic

That'll work, and much better than a $100 jy transmission...
