So I have a ‘66 F100 and the carb seems to be taking a ****. I’ve messed with it a ton and nothing is seeming to fix the problem. So I’m looking to just get a new carb.
I know now there’s probably many threads on what is best and all of that. I don’t know if I want a 2 barrel or 4. It currently has the stock carb. Eventually I’ll end up Rigging up a supercharger. Either way I’m looking for something reliable and that adds some more power and just overall let’s that engine run it’s potential some. Not looking for an EFI.
And even after a normal rebuild beware of the worn throttle shaft(s) and housing. This can allow a vacuum leak that is very hard to detect otherwise. If you have the engine running and spray some carb cleaner or other suitable spray using a spray straw around the base of the carb directed at the shafts you'll know you have a leak there if engine RPMs increase.
There are bushings these days for most makes of carburetors that can be installed to help and if it's really bad then new shafts might be needed, too. The bushings are cheap. Mikes Carbs sells them for under $4 for many carbs. This is just an example of one.
Well, since he says 2 or 4 barrel I assume it's a V8. A 300 six has a 1 barrel. Brand new knockoff 2 barrel carbs are $75 on Ebay. I had a worn shaft on my Holley 2 barrel and was able to buy the whole bottom plate assembly with shaft and butterflies for $24 free shipping. It works great so far.

i have the 300 with a single barrel now. Was looking at changing it to a 2 or 4.
I know someone who put a 4 barrel/offenhauser setup on his 300 and he loves it. A previous PO put an aftermarket carb with electric fuel pump on my 240. It works well. I plan on upgrading from the stock setup in the future
After being married to my wife for 43 years my father in law gave me the 64 F100 he bought new in Cheyenne, WY. I have a number of issues with the truck, but we are off on an excellent adventure.
I had an inline 300 with the Offenhauser / Holley 390 CFM 4 bbl set up, header and Comp Cams cam and lifters....hard to beat that set up with a 6 cylinder. (As long as you have enough rear end gear if you are running tall tires.

which comp cams were they exactly? Thinking I might as well do that since I’m putting the Holley 390 on.

How does that engine breathe with such a restrictive air filter?
I dumped that air filter not long after I got the truck. I felt that it was stupid to have a small filter on an engine that was being used all the time. It now has a standard 10" filter on it. I still have the original carb and oil bath air filter. Just haven't decided on what to do with them. I have a '93 300 that I plan on swapping in in the near future.
