2004 Limited Diesel 6.0 2WD

Hello all, new member here from Northern California. Got this excursion with a 125K mi and in decent condition. I absolutely love this SUV. I'm new to the diesel community and look forward to learning from this forum's wealth of knowledge related to these SUVs. I do have one question actually. I need to replace the damaged fuel sending unit and the shop is asking for $900 for the part. Does that price sound extreme?

To me personally, yes it does seem extreme at $900.
Mine is a gasser but the tanks are identical and I've had mine down and out twice now. Dropping the tank is very simple, only 4 bolts holding it and the attached skid plate up onto the frame then 3 small screws at the filler neck inside the fuel door. A floor jack can lower it ( best to run it very low on fuel or pump it down to reduce weight and make the job easier) enough to slide it our from the rear, you may need to first get the rear tires up on a few inches of wood as the RWD rigs do sit lower. There is enough slack in the wiring and fuel lines to get it all the way down before disconnecting them. Then you just have to spin off the tank lid and replace the level sending device. While you are in there you may want to do the Hutch and Harpoon mods inside the tank.

Reviewing the hutch and harpoon mods on youtube as i type this! thanks! and thanks for the advice on lifting her up. I had read about the necessity of a rear lock for those RWD going off road but i have no in depth knowledge on the subject so research will be done and good to know on the gears, makes plenty sense!

yea I saw those. but it was at that moment that I became disoriented by the vast variety of prices. the dealer wants about $600, and the indy shop said $900 and i saw them online for practically every price in between 250-900.
