I've checked items (battery connection, alternator, plug condition) all ok - except for the OD switch wire in the steering column- I'll check that after work today. Are there other things to be checked? If so, please advise.

Check engine light? DTCs?

Hopefully you have a method of reproducing/inducing the failure that doesn't put you on a boat ramp needing to be towed out. My bet is on the OD switch wiring - it is known to short the circuit, it needs to be done anyways, and it is simple to do.

If you still have the failure after that, the detective work gets more difficult...

No check engine or codes. Yeah, replicating will be difficult- as I don't want to put myself in a bad position! I'll check the OD switch wiring- yellow one, right?

To pull the top cover between the steering wheel and dash there are four screws in bottom cover. The wire is black covering with 3 small wire inside. It comes from shifter stem. (What I remember).

I caught mine in the early stages, the OD light and function was getting flakey so I pulled it apart. It was pretty hard to see but there was a tiny hole in the insulation and bare wire was rubbing on metal. I ordered a new shift tube with OD switch included....should be good to go for another 175K.

Dude, short term planning is inconsistent with 7.3 ownership.

OP check this thread and the PDF from Woodnthings below. Infogasm.

Camo- yeah, i pulled it yesterday- didn't see anything obvious. i did put some wrap around the wires so that nothing is sitting on metal. I'm gonna pull it again and look a even closer- especially after viewing Woodnthings guide!

BigB56- My OD is intermittent, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Yesterday I could not get the light to come on when pressing the button. I'm thinking I may need to replace it- but if it's not working, it should cause the fuse to blow.

Aawlberninf350- Thanks for the attachment!
