GMC commercial with Ford tailgate

I was watching TV and this commercial came on. In the middle of the commercial I hollered out "NO!". My daughter came to the top of the stairs and asked what I was hollering about.
See for yourself why. It's at the 24 second mark. The song they were singing combined with the image triggered me.

Funny!! But I just don't get the theme of the commercial. Are they trying to imply that everybody else should just throw away their "inferior" tailgate?

YES. But the only way to get a "non-inferior" tailgate is buy a new GMC truck with it attached.

I think the commercial is saying that guys that have 53 to 56 tailgates are old guys with gray/balding hair and white moustaches.

At least his tailgate is lighter to carry than the rest!

I took it to mean as pickups become wimpier and wimpier, GMC trucks are wimpiest of all. The folks in the commercial were singing “goodbye” to their manhood.

At least that’s the way I saw it.

As an autobody man I can't see anything going wrong with all the joints and latches after a bunch of gravel miles .

Men must no longer have the ability to get up in the bed of their truck without assistance.
Of course, nowadays how many trucks are out there that aren't used for anything but driving around town. Heaven forbid they dirty up the bed or cab by putting something in it.

I wonder how much it would cost to fix or replace it when something happens.

Ford has their version. Man it seems like a lot of work to just be able to get into your bed.

Hey, Abe. That was a great picture of you and your truck! Right out of central casting--"Real men drive Fords". All that's missing is the music and the voice over--maybe also a wide shot of some mountains. I'll be your agent. As you know, I work cheap. LOL.

Well, thanks, JIm. If they ever make a movie or shoot a TV Show or a Ford Commercial in Central PA about the 50's or 60's I can rent my truck with the proviso that I drive it. More money for a speaking part.

Funny thing, I didn't see any Chevy "inferior " tailgates being carried around. 😉

Too much rust, and they didn't have time to give tetanus shots to all those people.

Abe, if we do land a speaking part, we'll need to find a good voice coach. I'd want you to sound something like Sam Elliott to match the look we are going for. On second thought, maybe it might be a safer bet to market you as the strong silent type like the "Marboro Man". LOL.

That reminds me of the old “when it stops raining, you can almost hear your Chevy a rusting” commercial.
