What does the small wire stud on starter do?
im having fun tonight. Work truck sounded funny/ like weak battery when I started it. Drove to fill w diesel. And no start at the pump. Positive battery stud was broke. Explains the weak start then no start.
So I get a ride home and pull starter off the ex sitting in garage and in the process broke the small wire stud.
Now im trying to decide what route to go. The work truck starter has lifetime warranty from napa but they don't open until mon am. I would really like to get it home and not have the station have it towed.

If I am understanding you right, you are referring to the terminal on the starter that the smaller red wire goes to? That is the starter solenoid signal and is what tells the starter to spin when you turn the key to the "start" position. The big fat red wire to the starter is always hot. In a pinch, you can turn the key to the "run" position then jumper a small wire from the big red one to the small terminal to start the truck. You are going to be underneath the truck to do all this of course so please set the parking brake and make sure you are either in neutral (ZF6) or park (4R100).
