Guess they’re getting old

Hi all
I guess it happens to all of us but my truck (2008 6.4) is beginning to show it’s age.
You may remember I did a thread last summer on drilling out and replacing broken manifold bolts. Worlds worst job.
Well now I’ve got a few more things to add to the ”to do” list.
It’s recently started to drop oil on my driveway. Jumped under this morning and it’s coming from the rear main area.
Anyone have experience pulling a pan?
Today it started blowing white smoke on accel. Tail pipe is nice and dry. Have to check the coolant level when it cools. But I think that’s fine.
One hint is it just started today and today is rainy and cold here in LA (in the 50s)(yup that’s cold here). Could be intercooler?
Happy to yak with anyone with ideas or better yet, experience.
And no I don’t want to sell it and get a Ram. I love this truck.

Torque your pan bolts. I had a weep, did this and I'm dry as a bone so far. 5 out of the group were finger tight.

If I dared, I would drop them and put compound on them before retorq, but Give it a shot.

My prob was just a coating behind/under the rear of the pan and nothing was on the ground. Retorqued as discussed, hosed it down perfectly, so far solved.

Can you drop a pan in an installed engine?

if your getting smoke when cold and it’s not coolant....conn cr a scanner tool to the odbc port and see if you have any glow plug problems

other than that....work rocker tips and bent push rods will create smoke when cold. How’s you mpg. Mine was 8/9 highway before I did my rocker job and now it’s mid to high teens.

Yeah I don’t think it’s coolant either.
I just replaced a glow plug so I didn’t think to recheck that.
Last time I checked mileage it was 17 ish freeway. But haven’t checked in quite a while.

Went under to check the leak.
Its not the pan. Traced it up to the glow plug harness on number 3 which is the plug that got replaced this summer.
Seems to be seated well. Guess it needs a new o ring.

One more note for the day.
Went out for a drive, no white smoke.
Today is warm and dry.

Just in case some have not seen it.

I’m going to start getting after the white smoke by installing a new inter cooler/CAC.
From what I have been reading one of the reasons for the smoke is a collection of oil in the CAC being sucked through to be burnt.
I had the charge pipes undone in order to change the tensioners and belts recently and noticed a bunch of oil in there. The exhaust pipe is dry so I’m going to not go toward a coolant leak yet.
Also read about 40 degree/damp days producing smoke. I’ve had it on damp as well as warm days so that’s out.
I bought an aluminum unit off of Rock Auto for a few hundred bucks and new clamps and sleeves. I got a full aluminum welded piece as I’m not to thrilled about the longevity outlook for the aluminum/plastic pieces. Mine is pretty beat up looking.
Here is a vid of the smoke. It looks to me that it is on spool up with a bunch of boost so that’s leading me toward the CAC also.
I’ll get after it tomorrow.

On the fence a bit. If your coolant level is maintaining, and it was a humid day, not sure.

No codes eh? An injector not firing would definitely look like that, Unspent fuel. Are you hawking the dipstick to make sure your not producing.

Nope no codes.
Coolant level was low when I first started this. I left it at that level with a line drawn on the bottle. It has maintained and today I filled to proper level. Will keep a sharp eye on it.
I installed the new intercooler and took it out for a drive. No smoke. Then I gave it to the wife to drive around and she had it smoke once in about 5 miles. The smoking was on accel.
‘The inside of the old cooler was dirty as hell but no pooled oil.
The oil level is over full but I just took it to Jiffy lube last week for a change. So they are over filling it.
I have a long trip to San Diego tomorrow so I’ll be able to get a handle on regens, mileage and feel.
Im feeling like it may not be a bad idea to replace the egr coolers soon anyway because it’s got 210,000 on it.
On the subject of egr’s. I live in Calif. so manufacturers won’t ship deletes here. I’m just thinking of getting well built coolers and installing those. I know you guys in other states love the deletes and I would do it if it wasn’t such a pain in the butt here. What are y’alls thoughts? I’d love to hear from a California guy or two as well as others.
edit
Just drove it around for some errands. No smoke.
Im mildly optimistic but don’t really know why the new intercooler is making a difference. We’ll see on the 300 mile trip tomorrow.

Trip went great. Only had regen smoke one time while going slow. 18mpg.
I know it’s weird but it is a definite line before and after the new cooler.
Now a new problem, death wobble. Was zippin along in the high 70s around a slight bend and hit a bridge bump. Holy crap it shook. Got it slowed down and it stopped. So I’ll be replacing track bar bushings and checking all my linkage.
Guess they’re getting old.
