I have these two and I’m trying to devise a plan. Best case is to have the sleeper on the newer e450 chassis but the 6.0 liter has a head gasket issue and trans is out and needing repair. 7.3 is healthy with about 150k.

Can\should i swap the 7.3 into the 2008? Fix the 6.0 and move the sleeper?

Goal is to have a haul\tow rig with an alum flatbed with tool boxes, etc.

From what little I know about Ford's diesel offerings I'd dump the 6.0 ASAP and do pretty much whatever's required to rehad the 7.3, move the sleeper onto the E450 chassis and be done with the E350 cab/chassis and that ***@^(- confounded 6.0.

With the E450 chassis and the 7.3 engine you'd have a great tow/haul platform. You're also in the very enviable position of having both vehicles present so swapping the drive train should go fairly easy. The engine and transmission wiring harness as well as the PCM would have to follow the 7.3 engine naturally.

Another aspect might be having the 6.0 gone through with the "bullet proofing" I've read so many positive things about---not sure the cost of that full procedure but it does seem to cure a lot of the 6.0's issues. Those in the diesel forums might be a much better source of advice about this though---as I say I'm not a diesel expert by any means. Check with those guys too--also look around the web for other diesel-specific forums---has to be a lot of those I'm thinking?

Also wonder what happened to the ambulance body for that 2008 E450? Those make great work trucks!

The 6.0 is an excellent engine once you fix the quirks and is not as costly as some say. You will have to remove the engine to repair the head gasket. Once the engine is remove, everything is accessible that needs replacing. I had a mechanic install high pressure oil pump, oil cooler, EGR cooler, clean the turbo, and several other "bullet proofing" items. The 6.0 diesel forum is your best place for information on the 6.0. The 5R110 transmission that mates with the 6.0 is super reliable. I hear of less transmission failures with this transmission than the 7.3 transmission.

I have 823,000 miles on my Ford E350 van with the 6.0 PSD. If I had the choice of the same van with either the 6.0 or 7.3, I would take the 7.3 as it's easier to repair in the van. The 6.0 requires one to remove more stuff to get what you want to repair or replace.

It really depends on how much work you want to do. If you can easily swap out the 7.3 and transmission, then go that route. Like JWA said, you have swap out the computers too.
