Cold start - LOUD clacking - high idle - no throttle
I'm mostly wondering if this is normal behavior at 5F. I had not plugged the truck in overnight. Pure cold start. I am running 15w40 and only gave it one glow plug cycle ... it did fire right up, BUT, there was an extremely loud clacking like an injector was stuck, throttle was not operable and the idle immediately shot up to 1200. I let it run for 5 minutes or so then nursed it down the road in 1st gear between 1500-2000 RPMs, throttle came back. The loud clack subsided, idle went to normal, and it seemingly began to act like it usually does.
Is this normal in cold weather? 5F is cold but not THAT cold... Or am I looking at potential injector issues? For what it is worth, this is my first winter with a truck that starts below 40F, so that is a plus... Before the new injectors, it simply wouldn't start in single digit temps, so I don't know how it should act.

Change your oil to 5W40 synthetic and you should see an improvement. You might think that 5F isn't cold be keep in mind that these engines run off of compression, air and fuel with no spark plugs when the glow plugs aren't running and I'm amazed that the concept even works. If you want to hear some noise see if you can find a video from something like a 400 Cummins from the 1970's starting in the winter. The PCM cuts back on how much fuel you can give it when it's cold and that may (or may not) be why you can give it any fuel.

Yes that’s normal. And yes 5* is THAT COLD for a 18 year old dinosaur Plus you’re running 15w/40 oil which is very thick at 5*. The injectors run off oil, very cold 15w is NOT going to operate the injectors smoothly until the oil warms up…and you have almost 4 gallons of it too warm up! Your transmission fluid was just as cold so. The high idle is also normal, truck does it to warm up quick(er)..
This is a video Mike made of Triax 15w/40 oil at 0* compared to 75*…You can see how the oil has thickened but still flows at 0*.
Here’s a video I did comparing Triax 5w/40 at -1 and 86* . You can see how much easier to 5w flows in this video even at -1 when compared to Mike’s 15w oil flows at 0*...
