Aftermarket double din install

I was doing installs full time, just on Friday evenings and Saturdays now for extra cash, I'm not a huge fan of that Metra Kit, but I use it the most. Like others have said, you will have to pull the surround to get it out later. This is also the best way to install. I can tell you from experience, insurance companies frown on double-sided tape holding those radios in with the poorly setup kits. Cutting the sub dash does make it a LOT easier to get it in there, so if you have the tools, and the resolve, do it. At least it isn't a grand marquis with the air vent behind it that has to be reformed. Kit looks decent enough, just a pain to install and remove. Having said that, if you plan on adding anything to it and have the wiring to spare, run extensions to behind the glovebox so you don't have to pull it unless necessary.
Also, if concerned about audio quality, get a power pack or the equivalent and put that in when doing the radio if you have speakers upgraded, or planning on it in near future. These little amps are the size of a cell phone, (albeit, a few inches thicker but the width is the same) and can hide in the dash. You can generally tap good 12v constant that has a strong gauge and does everything from the dash, no running wires to speakers or to the battery. You'd be amazed at the sound improvement with amplified speakers. I did mine that way and it worked well.

I finally got everything finished up. The radio I got, and android unit from Ebay, ended up being little taller though than a standard double din. I was unable to use the mounting kit at all. After trimming all I could from the dash, I had to just push it back in the dash best and could. It seems fairly secure. It is not recessed at all, sticks out just a little. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow.
