Both the boot and plenum should be degreased with brake cleaner or carb/parts cleaner, anything else is some what of a gamble.

The OEM boots are weak after the length of time they have been in service.

The plenum opening is weak without the billet reinforcements.

The boot looks properly positioned, but the seal is questionable due to the issues I listed above. You could build a boost leak detector and go that route, or you could call it good and drive the truck.

Since the boots are so old and flimsy, I would recommend new boots and billet rings to properly eliminate the leaks. Some good T-clamps are a good idea too.

Yeah there’s definitely some oil building up. Thanks for the replies. Also when I started it up, I notice the blew smoke is coming out behind or under the turbo as well so I must have a leak. Turns out maybe I didn’t get such a great deal on this truck after all lol.. Oh well, every vehicle needs work sooner or later.

I checked the turbo while I was at it, spins very freely, no noises, no movement side to side/up-down/ or back and forth. Can you get tell by looking at a picture if it’s the original? 1999 with 257k miles.

Wheel looks original and a bit rough. You can see the edges are rounded slightly and I cannot remember seeing one with notches in it like yours has.

I'll see if I can drag up a picture of my 240,000 mile wheel from when I rebuilt my turbo a while back.

Wow that’s a huge difference. I must have play in it to cause those notches to rub out. So that was your wheel after the rebuild? How difficult is it to rebuild one of these turbos?

Oh no, that was before the rebuild. I put a riffraff 4/4 billet wheel in.

Difficulty level is a 3-4 out of 10 where 10 is difficult. The hardest part is getting the turbo back in properly.

that's a dusted wheel, buy a new wheel preferably a billet wheel, or buy the rebuild kit with the upgraded 360°(while I'm there.)
also looking at that picture looks like your missing a worm clamp on the plenum boot.
I went with the Spturboost 360° rebuild kit with the 5x5 SPX billet wheel.

Thanks for the replies guys. After looking at the price of a billet wheel, should I just buy a new turbo and wastegate combo? I found them for around $350 give or take $50. The billet wheels seem to be around $180-200. I’d almost rather spend another $100-150 for a plug n play whole unit.

That depends on your confidence level of what you are getting in the whole turbo that you purchase. You can rebuild yours with a billet wheel and it will be better than new for the most part.

Really think about what your goals are for the truck and move forward from there.

Don't even think of getting those $300 eBay turbo, they are cheaply made and will fail, they have a different compressor wheel that's held by a nut. I know I bought one for a side job I did a while back.

if a cheap turbo or bad rebuild fails, dont forget when it maybe sending them pieces of metal too. thats right, either out the exhaust or into the intake!

Many of us have rebuilt a turbo for our 7.3. There are several well written instructions out there as well.

If quality parts are used, the risk of failure is very low.
