1982 F150 Restoration: Need Engine Repair Facility Advice
Hi Arizona Folks:
I posted this in the main forum but thought I would post it in the AZ chapter as well.....I have a Blue 1982 F150 XLT 302, c6 2WD 2.70 All stock, 177K miles. I have had this truck now for about 3 years and has been running and a real champ mechanically as a utility truck. 2 pumps, set the choke, starts right up. Doesn't like warm weather and runs rough out here in AZ but bearable. My father-in-law, RIP, took very good care of it in Nebraska. It has the normal body rot where you all find it in your trucks. I spent some money getting it running through a shop in Nebraska, brought it to Arizona, and was going to start restoration when the house renovation interrupted the plans and budget. Fast forward to today all house projects are done (whew!) and I am turning my attention to the truck again. I have plan for the interior and exterior and can do a good deal of the work. The engine is a different story. I don't have the skills or the tools for major engine work. While it runs well, it leaks like a sieve and there is a low growl, almost like a diesel clatter from somewhere. Bearings? Water Pump, AIR pump..... i don't know. Oil pressure is decent although at the low end of the normal range at temperature. My question for you all is does anyone know of a reputable engine repair facility in Arizona, preferably in PHX or Prescott areas. I want someone to evaluate the engine and see what work is needed to stop the leaks and discuss options for continued reliability and performance. I have been to a couple of "restoration shops" They cater more to the Barrett Jackson crowd and wanted me to spend silly money on a show queen.....not for me. Any help you all could give would be appreciated. I have been lurking here over the past couple of years and have learned so much about these trucks from you all that I feel I am better equipped to work on the truck now. I thank all of you for that..
