Duane, two of the three events around here I might not have too much concern about. The one group I would have concern with is the Harley crowd. I know most that show up for the reunions are middle aged baby boomers, most are doctors, lawyers, engineers and the like but for that week they see themselves as leather wearing tough bikers. I just get the feeling a good number, while in their normal daily lives are conservative well behaved people, will spend the week living, as one former HD used to advertise, "biker lifestyle". If they pay good enough money, like a few have mentioned on rental cars, will use and abuse the property.

My mom used to work for a little home town newspaper and we got press passes to shoot pictures on the floor of the Astrodome during several tractor pulls.

One year they brought in Bigfoot. Bob Chandler had rented it out for the movie "Take This Job and Shove It' and they tore it up pretty bed (see scene where they blasted through the guard shack). He was barely able to get it repaired in time for the Astrodome show. He was furious as they had never mentioned they were going to tear it up.

It was driven it up onto a big pile of dirt on the edge of the arena as I don't think anyone had really thought of crushing cars prior to that movie but that's where it started. A whole sport was born.

I always wanted to ask Bob what his thoughts were about the incident in retrospect.

No I wouldn't rent out for a stranger to drive. There are 2 people outside my family that I would let drive my stuff.

Rent it to a stranger, NO. I've had several people contact our club about using an old car for a prop. Professional photogs often forget that they aren't sharing the income with us, so we're not going to share the expenses with them.

Come to think of it, I might charge someone if they wanted to learn how to drive and operate it.

I'd never rent my 53 for someone to drive. I have had many folks take pics around it though and one special story comes to mind. Came out of a store to find a couple with a boy that was mentally challenged looking at my truck. As they tried to pull the boy away he kept yelling "Mater! Mater!" and wanting to sit in it. I walked up, opened the door and told him to jump in. That was the happiest little boy in the world when I took him and his Dad for a ride while mom shopped. They wanted to pay me for my time, but his smiles were all of the payment I could ever need for such a deed.

Now that is a great thing to do! I bet that kid still remembers riding in Mater!

That story is an a point in favor of patina versus paint relative to the Great
Patina thread. No little boy would mistake my truck for Mater.....

Thanks for sharing!

Seems to me, if you let someone drive your truck that's one thing. If you rent it out though, and something bad happens, I'm not sure how that works from an insurance angle. I wouldn't want to have to find out the hard way. Be sure to check with your agent so there's no surprises.
