Not at all. I need someone raining on my parade so i dont get carried away and buy something i shouldnt. Im just trying to decide if this truck just has bad fuel problems or something more. Bad fuel and dirty tanks, lines and such i can deal with without a bunch of money invested. i just heard the tranny was rebuilt at 70k. I dont have any experience with the e4od's. My C6 has been dying for 20 yrs on the 86.
BTW i also put the oil cap on the VC at 1300 rpm and no vapor at all coming out. The fuel pressure at idle was 45+ but couldnt tell how consistent the pressure was with the air gauge o-ring not sealing well. [shower]
If you have no blow-by, and it sounds like you don't, a cylinder is not the issue. Buy it and we will help you get it running top-notch. I wouldn't be afraid to my self or that price.
Got it out for test drive today. I put 5 gal of fresh diesel in tank that was almost empty. Took it out for about 5 miles and ran smooth, just like it should. Good power. On way back it died on me. It started bucking and slowly lost all cylinders one or 2 at a time then stopped. It was out of fuel with no smoke at exhaust. Let out some air at the fuel bowl and 2 minutes later it fired back up. It went 200 ft and died. 2 minutes later got it going and pulled off road letting it idle for 5 minutes roughly. It smoothed out some and i drove it around for 20 minutes more. It continued to have slightly rough idle and smoking. Both dark and white smoke it seemed. Here is a screenshot under acceleration. How do these numbers look? So, is this a fuel issue? It seemed like one injector wasnt working with the rougher idle and smoke. Could this have been brought on as a result of fuel starvation?
I checked the fuel pressure at this time and was 50 psi at idle. I pulled the fuel filter after the run and it was darker than before the test drive. It took some effort to blow through it.
Oil was a one quart down. It didnt look really dirty. Not sure what kind of oil he put in it either. I always use motorcraft. I looked at oil the first time i looked at truck and it looked new. Looking at it today with 45 minutes of idle time and 30 minutes of drive and idle time it looks dirty. Oil was changed last spring and driven 12 miles and parked for above reasons.
Maybe the umbrella on the pick up tube inside the fuel tank is either clogged ir broken off. Also on the fuel bowl on the pressure regulator theres a screen that get clogged up with crud might wanrmt to clean that out as well.
I did clean the FPR screen out a few times with a Q-tip and got black stuff off it. The old fuel filter had black jello ALL over it. Running off the front tank with a new filter- its already dark grey in 15 miles but no jello. The front tank is the cleaner of the two and am running on it. The back tank is 3/4 full and will not flow fuel. Algae and junk in that one. The front has junk in it from the look of things and I think it may be causing an occasional restriction before the fuel bowl. One question i have is: After it died and i got it running again, Could fuel starvation cause it to run rough and smoke appearing to drop out at least 1 cylinder after the first 5 or 10 minutes of driving.
The first 5 minutes of driving it ran fine with no smoke and very smooth.

Yes low fuel presure will cause you to smoke white, I would clean out both tanks really good, then test drive it.
After it warmed up and died because of fuel starvation, got it running again but a little rough. This is when it started smoking. At times somewhat heavy. Some white smoke, some looked darker grey with maybe a little blue. Light was flat, no sun so couldn't tell if blue. It was a 20 minute test drive.
Test Drive:
start by jumping GPR and idle 10 min- 3 glow plugs working maybe
drive 7 minutes- very smooth, no smoke
8-10 min died fuel tank restriction, restart- bleed air at shrader valve- get it running and pull off road letting it idle for 5 min. smoking now, white and grey smoke. No antifreeze smell
5 minute drive back and park. Still smoking running a little rough and idling rough.
Thats pretty much it. So, bad fuel and injector o-rings and maybe turbo o-rings. I cant quite nail it down.
Im just nervous as there was a can of starting fluid in the back.
Just an update to not leave a thread hanging, the price ended up being higher than originally indicated after i got it running; somewhat. If he comes back with the right price ill start a new thread to get it going.
Even though you managed to get it running it sounds like it has problems, possibly relatively expensive ones. Don’t know all the detais of your discussions but he should stick with his original price. I wouldn’t hesitate too much about walking away from it. Likely he will call you back at the original price
