I have a 79 f250 4x4 with a 4 speed manual transmission (Np435). The original motor was a 300-6 but it is shot so I was gonna swap something in with more HP (V8). I think the only two choices I have are a 302 or 351W without changing the bellhousing?? Do I need to get different tower mounts and where can I find them?? What else do I need to do?? This is my first swap so all the help I can get is greatly appreciated!!

 

If it is anything like the 80-86 trucks then yes you need new different tower mounts.
Don't know from where? A parts truck? Did you check like LMC truck? Place a want add?

I am going to guess you will need to make changes to wiring for the sensors, coil, ALT., etc.
Then you have radiator, would need to be bigger and the inlets / out lets may be different between the 2 motors.
Then you have EXH hook up.
That is all I can think off the top of my head.

Yes, different towers for the motor mounts - unless you want to go with an FE engine like the 390 - I think 240/300s and FE 360/390s use the same towers.

 

Thanks for the input, I've been looking for 351W towers but can't find them anywhere. Will the 351M/400 towers work for this swap?

 

There are no 351W Towers for Dentsides because Ford never put 351Ws in them.

The search term you want is "302 towers." Those will support a Windsor.

 

Ok thanks so I need some "302 towers" from a 77-79 4wd? Do they have to be from an f250?

 

The 302 was never factory installed in a 73/79 leaf sprung 4x4, so 302 towers don't exist unless we're talking 2wd trucks.
I'd test fit the Windsor with your current 300 towers & if that's a no go then try the 351m/400 towers.
Might be fabrication time.

302 not available in F150/250 with 4WD until 1980, and 1980 and later parts will not work on 1979 and earlier.

351W not available in F150/350 2WD/4WD & Bronco until 1981.

2WD: Same engine supports (aka towers/stands/perches): 1969/79 F100 302; 1975/79 F150 302; 1977/79 F100/350 351M/400.

2wd engine supports will not fit the 4x4 chassis's.
