True Dual exhaust

Does anyone do true dual exhaust any more?
I had a 98 F150 with a 5.4. I split the y pipe, left the Cats in and did dual exhaust with no mufflers. The cats kept it quiet enough and sound quality was ok. Is there any reason to not do this on a modern 5.0?

You shouldn't fool with the location or distance from the motor of any sensor on the 5.0. Supposedly very sensitive to changes.

I was a "twice pipes" guy, but these days, the question is "...is there any reason TOO do this....".

Agree. The pipes aren't going to net you much, if any, gains. If I ever do anything with my exhaust it will be just a muffler change to give it a little more growl without any drone in the cabin. I can't stand these trucks/cars that you can hear before you can see them.

The Harley is a different story.....

2017-19 Raptors have true duals on the H.O. 3.5 ecoboost. There's been a few people on the forums that have put the Raptor exhaust on non-H.O. 3.5 ecoboosts.
With some fabrication skills it could probably be adapted to fit a 5.0. The only difference would be on an Ecoboost the flanges connect to the exhaust housings of the turbos and they may or may not bolt right up to the 5.0 exhaust manifolds?
I'm not sure what you'd gain from true duals on a 5.0. A different sound, but whether or not it's a good sound remains to be seen or heard.

Stainless Works makes an X pipe with dual outlets that goes with their headers. Beyond that I don't think it'd be worth the effort to do. I mean if the truck can make 385 hp with a single 2.5" pipe between the cats and muffler, how much more could true duals possibly get out of it?

Thanks for the replies. In my case, doing the exhaust would have nothing to do with performance gains but all about the sound. I was thinking that the system I described could likely be done cheaper than the off the shelf Cat back systems.

I’ve heard a lot of late model Mustangs with aftermarket exhaust and many of them sound annoyingly raspy. Make sure you hear and exhaust before committing to it. Another thing you don’t want is a drone in the cab at cruising speed.

True duals, with no crossover, is a bad idea. You get better scavaging and a better sound with a crossover or X pipe. Whatever you do, buy an engineered system vs going to the local muffler shop and having something fabbed with mud dawber welds and Cherry Bombs. Also, nothing sounds worse than back crackle when you let of the throttle.

I wouldn't want to have someone cut up the factory Y pipe to split to duals, especially since it's all stainless and I doubt most muffler shops would redo it with stainless pipe.

Come on JKBrad.......my cherry bombs sound great on my flathead V8!........ lol......I couldn't agree more with some of these annoying exhausts...... I also remember reading somewhere that a single exhaust seemed to be better in a truck for all around performance..........my 2006 f-250 I did swap out the muffler for a magnaflow keeping everything else stock...sounds great......

Seemingly everyone here does the true duals, no cats, glasspacks or no mufflers at all, 2" pipe straight out the back on their trucks. The kind that is super loud and raspy and IMO sounds like complete ****. I don't even know why people WANT their truck to sound like that.

The duals I added included a 3-1/2" pipe from the Y to the new muffler The original leaves the Y at 3" through the resinater eventho the flange end of the Y is 3-1/2", It leads back to a muffler with a 3-1/2" pipe feed in and two 3" exits to the rear. It's a 70 series Flowmaster and needed to place an "auger" in front of it and defusers in front of the Chrome tips to make my 5.0 tollerable.

Do the math: 3" = 7.06 sq. inches.....3-1/2"= 9.62 sq inches ..........I'll take the 3-1/2" head pipe all day long to a 3".

As a point. I bought the SS kit off E-Bay for under $300 which came with a 40 Series Flowmaster which was too short for me. I also bought step SS clamps from Speedway after i opened the carton and thought the singles were too cheap. Still don't have $500 in everything and some stuff to sell at a swap meet.

Good Luck

Last time I saw Cherry Bombs was back in the late 60s when I put them on my 442. I bought a couple of "blanks" where the inlet matched the exhaust diameter in front of the rear axle. Only problem was the local NAPA store did not have that size pipe for me to fabricate the aft part of that setup. He did have some large 4" ID pipe that I could clamp on the OD of the Cherry Bombs though. So I made the aft portion of the exhaust from that 4" stock. Now that had a throaty roar.

Parts Plus in Abilene TX keeps Cherry Bombs in stock. Last time I had them was on a 67 Mustang coupe I had for about 15 years. Traded it for a pickup, worst trade I ever made! the pickup was alright just missed my Mustang. Of course having it as long as I did it was a Long way from stock, I won a lot of money with that car!

I think with today's modern engines, the function of true duals has gone by the wayside. Too much computer overriding fueling, air, etc. to make a difference in economy. More for sound.
This 2018 5.0L, I looked at true duals, but several shops said I should do high flow cats, and it got too rich for me.
I used to do cat-back MBRP's on many trucks for sound, but some had drone. This truck, I went Corsa, and am way impressed. If you really want good sound, and absolutely NO drone or noise in the cab... unless you get on it, this is the way to go IMHO. Pricey, but over the long haul, its worth it.

The stock muffler is an engineering masterpiece, straight thru with tubes that cancel out drone. no reason to mess with exhaust, unless your going with headers or that you have a desire for drone
