New (to me) 7.3L diesel

Hello all, I intro'd myself in the New Member forum.
So here's my story of my first diesel Ford truck! I've owned several trucks in the past, 1980 F150 straight 6 (my first new truck when I was 20), F150 1990 straight 6, 1997 (and a half!) F250 HD with 460ci.
I do all my own work mechanically speaking but I'm not up to speed on diesels.

Dad sold me his 2000 F350 2WD manual 6-speed XLT 7.3 L diesel for a good family price. He had 62,000 on the Odo and stored the truck in a garage in winter during it's life in Minn.
I retired in June and wife and I flew out from WA state to MN to purchase his truck and his 2000 Gulfstream Yellowstone 34' 5th wheel trailer. The only issue is cosmetic, he had it up to northern MN in the summer of 2017 and got caught in a hail storm so it has some dings on the hood and roof.

Now, Dad ordered every option you could possibly get when he ordered his truck. He drove it very little as it was simply a tow vehicle for the trailer from MN to AZ, or TX or CA or wherever their hearts desired when he was an active RV'er.
Today he is 88 and hasn't used either rig for over a year.

Everything checked out fine with the truck. It had had the cam position sensor replaced, I changed the oil while there (used the 15W-40 synthetic Rotello) and replaced the Fuel filter.
She ran like a champ pulling the 5th back to WA state in June. Since then, I've put about 5,000 miles on the truck, running loads of stuff over to Lakeside Montana as we're building and moving there in May 2019.
I put a critter guard on the front (Ranch Hand) and new tires as his 2nd set of tires were 11 years old. I purchased a DiskLok steering wheel lock as I know these trucks are easy to break into and jack. At least the Disklok will slow 'em down, I hope.

We are going to live in the 5th wheel from May thru Sep while our mountain home in Montana is built on Flathead Lake, Montana.

I was totally shocked it gets 21 mpg doing 60 on the freeway with no load. Averages 11 mpg pulling a 10,000 lb 5th wheel. 9 mpg if a good head wind is pushing against us.

Q: When the truck gets warm, running for a long spell, the clutch pedal makes a noise when depressed to the floor. I suspect its's some sort of bearing or washer type? What causes this noise?

Welcome to FTE. I saw that first pic you posted and thought it was a miniature (RC) truck with dog standing next to it. .
‘I’m sure someone will come along that has the ZF6 that can answer your question. Sharp looking truck.

‘Actually it’s probably on it’s last leg...I’m usually not so giving but I’ll take that dying beast off your hands…for free! You know with the Xmas season and all. Just let me know when you want me to pick it up.

" the clutch pedal makes a noise when depressed to the floor "
Is it the clutch pedal - sound coming from under the dash inside the cab - or do you really mean a sound from the clutch itself - something inside the bellhousing? My clutch pedal squeaks under the dash, but that's whatever Ford chose for a bearing for the pedal bracket. Been doing it for far too long but it's really the least of my worries.

If it's inside the bellhousing, well then that's a big job for a nice summer day. If you do end up pulling the trans, there are a lot of ideas for some improvements for the clutch, especially for towing. Look for ZF6 related posts from Sous, he's done a lot in this area.

LOL. On a side note, this was dads crown jewel, he could have got 5-8k more selling it outright, he was happy it was going to me since we both take care of our toys religiously. He named her "Gilda".

‘Well, it looks like you have a great rig. I’m the second owner of mine with 378K and I brought mine back to life. You’re in a great place for advice and help!

Remember to use ONLY OEM SENSORS! Look into the Hutch and Harpoon mod. And if you still have the stock air filter dump it for a AIS, 6637 or S&B.
‘Clay at Riff Raff Diesel is a great place for quality parts.

Welcome to the FTE Big Mak! That truck is the 2wd clone of my truck, down to the grille guard, ZF6 and color!

Grab your beverage of choice, a notepad, pen and start searching and reading.

I have done a lot to my truck and transmission and it is a beast that will do anything I ask of it.

We are here for questions, concerns and thoughts.
