Howdy
Planning a fall trip to Niagra Falls, upsate NY, Maine etc, from the twin ciites of MN. Do not want to go via Chicago, thinking of passing through Sault St. Marie, Flint MI, Hamilton ON. Anyone have any experience, suggestions?

I would head north and follow the south shore of Lake Superior all the way to Sault Ste Marie, head south down the east shore of Michigan and then cut across Ontario to the Falls, I would stay on the Canadian side of the falls not the US side. The north side of the UP is more scenic than the south side and the US side of the falls is kind of run down compared to the Canadian side. This is the route we took going to the Canadian Maritimes a few years back.

I would agree with this! You'll catch I-75 at Sault Ste Marie. And you can take that all the way South to Detroit area, and then head east into Canada. The only issue with crossing into Canada is what you might have in your refrigerator. I don't think they want any fresh produce or meat.
