Ford Reman E4ODs, How bad are they?
Hey everyone,
Not sure if anyone will remember amungst all the E4od threads, but I have been trying to diagnose a problem for some time. Stalling when coming to a stop, not downshifting, pressure spiking.
It's a '92 5.8 4x4.
After months of reading and trying different things, I have now pulled the pan 3 times and have not had a warm and fuzzy about the debris that's been shaking loose. So it's time for a rebuild.
I would go to an established local shop that does great work, would really build this thing and has a very good warranty, however their warranty is only good at their shop. The poop part is I'm about to move 300 miles away and need this thing driving.
So the only alternative to a local shop or online (online dealers sketch me out) is the Ford dealership.
They are offering a reman for $1,957 + tax with a 3 year, unlimited mile nationwide warranty. The gentleman told me there have been many updates to the ford remans but wasn't sure exactly what has been updated. Anyone have any idea??
This will be a dump runner, landscape haulling type truck. Not real heavy use.
Are the Ford remans really that bad for light duty use? Most of the bashing I have seen has been on the diesel forums, and I believe have merit. Any advise to help it last as long as possible?
Thanks for any advise!
Joe

If you hear about failing E4ODs, most of it is from towing abuse. They overheat and need proper cooling. I would look into an auxiliary trans cooler connected inline with the factory trans cooler.

My truck has a factory trans oil cooler in addition to the one in the radiator. Is it safe to blow these out or should I just get a new one?

Willing to bet that $1957 price does not include torque converter.
Most folk who complain about E4s are driving used/abused/wore-out trucks with 150K+ miles & dozens of other issues.
When I had mine rebuilt, the builder had me send the external cooler with the trans for cleaning by them & a can of flush for my radiator cooler.

Nothing is listed or was mentioned about it being a genuine Motorcraft part. So I am assuming that Ford has decided to contract these rebuilds out.

Normally when suppliers have an account like Ford, they go the extra mile to assure performance. Just like the Motorcraft parts that are made by suppliers. I think that is also indicated in the great warranty of 3 yrs no mileage limit. Sandy
