got lucky when oil pump shaft sheared on my 302 in 56. No main or rod bearing damage I’ve found.
Im looking at a cam upgrade , thinking of a comp 268h.
Mine truck is 4 speed with 3.00 gears. Stock compression , performer manifold and headers with 600 com Edelbrock carb.
I might pull rarely with trailer and total weight of 3500 car and trailer.
3.00 gears have it turning about 2460 at 70.
tjoughts
I have a hydraulic roller Magnum CompCam in my 49 f1 5.0 w/c4 trans & 3.25 gear. Truck weight is about 3200 lbs. Cam advertised duration 270/276, lift .533/.544 .......puts out lots of power & torque and I get 15 miles per gal. around town driving. ........hope this helps ya.
Comp cams has a downloadable program called camquest where you put in your info and it will give you options and a short explanation of how each cam will react with your set up . Very use full and interesting .
I had used the matching Edelbrock Performer cam on my 68 FT 302, with the Performer intake, 600 carb, plus heads and was happy with the low end torque and freeway driving. I think my rear was 3.25 hooked to a C4 trans which was 1 to 1 I believe..
Make sure that you find out why the shaft broke. Have run across a few where something kept the oil pump from turning, causing the shaft to break.
I will. It was supposed to be a rebuilt motor and I believe it. Going to she knows valve seals but I suspect a peice of silicone. Whatever it is will be new bearings, hardened shaft and pump. No wear on lifters or anything

I have that Comp Cams 268H cam in my 302. I've got 351 Windsor heads, stock 4 bbl intake, stock small block Ford exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust,Pertronix III Flamethrower distributor and coil, Ford FMX auto transmission with no overdrive, and a Dana 60 rear with 3.54 gears. It has lots of torque, it loves to pull, and takes to hills like a diesel. Comp describes it in the catalog as a mildly rough idle. To me the idle is a little rougher than mild. But it still sounds good.
