I'm collecting parts to replace the chain, tensioners and oil pump.
I think as the chains stretch the cam timing is retarded a little so with new chains the timing should be restored to OEM and probably will have a bit more power than it has right now.

Our 2003 5.4L 2v 170k has a loud ticking noise at startup for a couple of minutes on the passenger side which I'm assuming is a timing chain/tensioner issue.
I'm collecting parts to replace the chain, tensioners and oil pump.

What oil pump and timing parts are you planning on using?? MC or Melling, or something else? I am getting close to "collecting" the necessary components , so , I am curious as to what you and others are getting, which prompted this post.

Yeah those cast iron tensioners I understand are preferred...pretty sure I seen a Melling set on amazon that had everything chain, gears , tensioners & guides or is there a reason you went with Cloyes???
I resently replaced my water pump....will it need to come off again or can that come off with timing chain cover as a unit?

There might be a chain kit from a year or two earlier that comes with the cast iron tensioners that might work.
I've used Cloyes chains and Melling pumps in the past and liked them.
This is the first Triton engine I've worked on other than service items.
Not sure about the water pump, I was going to replace it since it is original.
Was going to do the radiator, too, and I'm fairly sure the radiator is 2 row, but can't find anyone who carries one that isn't 1 row.
I think I've seen all aluminum 2 rows, but they're a bit pricey.
Our '92 & '93 Explorer plastic tank radiators split after 20 years/100k so that's probably an age out issue like tires.
The Exped radiator is now 16 years/170k so I figured if I replaced it now while it's out I'd get another 16 years/170k.

I went with MC water pump and aftermarket radiator when I did mine a yr or so ago. The radiator was wider then stock one it replaced it wasn't terrible at cooling and wasn't leaking but I'm pretty sure the transmission cooler was not performing well inside the radiator. This all was done when I replaced the intake manifold a year to year and half ago. I dug around a bit to see what radiator I got but I can't find that info right off
I don't think a wider radiator will fit in our Exped.
What was wrong with the intake - vacuum leak?
Thanks for reminding me, the trans cooler in my radiator is blocked, so I definitely want to get a new radiator.
I'm currently running 2 large B&M flat plate coolers for the trans.

I replaced the intake manifold because the crossover was leaking coolant and I long suspected a small vacuum leak in the plastic.
My truck has the FX4 package, so it also had a additional trans cooler which I also replaced.
