Hate to beat a dead horse... what is the most often cause of failure with cruise control?

I dont have to have it but this last trip might of been slightly more enjoyable with the cruise control working? My problem is time! Trying to relocate my business cross country and spending a day of trouble shooting at this juncture is not an option, was wondering if there was a collection of trouble shooting possibilities for a non working cruise. I get nothing at all from the cruise control. Ive never had it work as long as Ive had the truck. Its a stick so wondering if the system is any different than an auto trans? Suggestions on where to start. Ive read several threads but for the most part the links are getting 402 messages and going no where? Thoughts on Where to start?

Could be a lot of things really.

1. Does your E-brake light work when you apply the brake?
2. If not, then your switch might be causing the PCM to see the E-brake on even though you don't see the light.
3. Does your third brake light work?
4. Is the fuse blown by the master cylinder?
5. When was the last time you know for sure CC was working properly?

Start there and report back to us.

Take a look at the clutch pedal position switch. I put a new one on and it fixed mine!

Backing what Sous stated. Mine not working was the ebrake one click down. If you have the recall done it could be the fuse they added or the wiring
they did during the recall coming loose. Other than that the switches for the 3 peddles (ebrake, brake, clutch). If the fuse is blown the switch mentioned below
is probably bad.

Also check the switch on the master cylinder ( that the recall was done for). My cruse failed again when it started to leak fluid through it. It is really hard to
see as it is on the inboard side of the master cylinder at an angle. Need a stool to get high enough to look over and see it.

Mine quit working because the transmission solenoid block was leaking, there was no visual sign that there was a leak. I found out when my TC died and I did a complete rebuild. After the repair everything works fine.

It’s been so long ago, I don’t remember all of the symptoms! Just remember my cruise control wasn’t working and I checked my clutch position switch and it was bad. don’t think I ever tried to start it without the clutch in!

So im not getting an ebrake light on the dash at all and my ebrake is in dire need of an adjustment so that might bethe best start point. I read about the M/Cyl recall so I bought the Ford oem part andreplaced it last year. As mentioned time is mt enemy right now. Will post up my findings as soon as I can, thanks again for the suggestions.

Regarding that clutch switch...does it have two triggers for you guys with the ZF6? One at a touch that would kick off the cruise control and another deep in the pedal for starting? Boss73's post would indicate that it does and that is where I would look first, it's probably an easy check. Mine is an automatic but the lack of the parking brake indicator light does not affect my cruise control.

Probably not relevant or you'd have mentioned it; My CC failed with a short in the wire to the VSS on the rear axle. I also lost the speedometer/odometer when that happened.

Clutch switch. Still depresses for starting the truck, but quits at the plug. Its a $10 and 5 min replacement. My $$$ is on that.
