Rpms randomly going up while driving

Hi guys, I have a 2001 f350 4x4 with an auto trans. I’ve ran into a problem lately when I’ll be driving at a constant speed and my Rpms randomly go up and back down. It runs great when I give it a lot of gas but sitting at a constant speed the rpms move up a lot and almost jerk the truck. I’ve noticed that it really only seems to happen when the motor is at full operating temp. Also, the slower I’m going I’ve noticed the more the rpms go up. I’ve done a little research and might think it is the ICP but I honestly don’t have a clue. Any thoughts?

Couple easy things to check is to unplug the ICP electrical connector and look for oil in the plug or connections. Or maybe a loose tin nut on the IPR. Or unplug the fuel bowl heater

I also forgot to say I haven’t experienced a rough idle. It will however, when it’s cold, rev up if it’s just sitting for a few and stay at that point until I touch the brake or gas. I’m pretty sure this is normal but not sure

Toque convertor is locking and unlocking in my opinion.

That is normal in cold weather.

That would be my prime suspect too. Does speed increase too, or not?

Does the speed of the truck go up as the motor RPM does? He initial explanation is not clear on that. So could be the trans slipping or TC unlocking as mentioned
above.

The speed might go up a little. The rpms go up really quick then back down so I really can’t tell. It only seems to happen when the truck is fully heated up.

It sounds like the issue I had, TC was locking and unlocking. It was an easy fix…$3800 later no problems whatsoever!

Mark Kovalsy is the man you want to hear from. There are one or two others who might know too but he checks in here most often and his knowledge is second to none.

Torque Pro can read your TC slip - $5 Android app, $30 Bluetooth OBDII adapter, download the Ford SuperDuty-specific PIDs. It will pay for itself very quickly as your truck ages.

Though I've never used it for TC slip, I'm certain Forscan can read it as well... and it's an even more beneficial tool in other areas. The program is free, you need a Windows laptop and a compatible adapter.

That's what you need to diagnose this. It is almost certainly the torque converter locking and unlocking. And no, that doesn't mean the converter is bad. This problem is usually caused by bad data getting to the PCM, which then tells the converter to unlock.
