Rusted out drive shaft - replacement needed

Hi guys,

I'm the original owner of a 16 year old 2002 Excursion. The Northeast Ohio winters have taken a tool on her.

My drive shaft is extremely rusted. I looked and the pimple type drive shaft weights have rusted off. I need a new drive shaft. The original is the double cardan type. I really do not need a new one as a used would do fine. I did a quick search and found this one below.

https://fortwayneclutch.com/product/...hj-yc353602hj/

Any suggestions on getting a used drive shaft or the best deal on a new one? I don't know where to look for used or new.

Thanks

Car-part.com is the site I use when looking for used stuff. It searches multiple salvage yards based on how you want to search.

Does the Excursion use the same shaft as F250 or F350? If yes, what year range?

Nelic! Good to see you on the board again!

The Super Duties have different lengths and the Excursion is in a class all it's own with a few exceptions. I'd say that the drive shafts are probably very different

I don't have a definitive answer to this, but I can offer this information:

The regular cab long bed has the same wheelbase as the Excursion, so you would think the rear driveshafts would be similar. All other cab/bed configurations would have longer driveshafts. Excursions and earlier Super Duty trucks are pretty much the same from the transfer case-forward are pretty much the same, so you would think the front driveshafts would be similar.

BUT...

The parts interchange lists Excursion rear driveshafts to be exclusive to Excursion only, truck rear driveshafts exclusive to trucks only, and they also list them as engine specific. There are also a few year-specific shafts. Front driveshafts are also listed as vehicle-specific, and also engine specific. There are a few year-specific shafts here too.

So, between the Excursion and the SD trucks, interchange shows a couple dozen driveshaft possibilities. I don't know what the differences are, other than most of the rear shafts that are too long anyway are 2-piece driveshafts.

OP,
I would plan on rebuilding a used driveshaft anyway, so might as well just rebuild yours

I sent you a PM, I have both of my original driveshafts lying around after replacing both this past February.

Mine is pretty bad too, front and rear. I was planning on total replacement, but thanks guys for the idea of re-tubing them. That might save me a bit of money too. I already have new u-joints to go in there so if I stick the ends into some Rust-Ex and then take them in, retube them and paint them, that might be a cheaper alternative.

As far as buying one, you can find them rebuilt and new in various places on the net. Prices vary.

Tasca ford carries the them new OEM
A1 Cardone makes reman units front and rear.
If you want a really good shaft and are a bit nuts about the truck, check out Tom Woods driveshafts. Tom Woods Driveshafts Excursion

Tom Woods, JE Reel, High Angle driveshaft Are 3 well know builders of quality shafts. ( High Angle has built most of my race and my Ex shafts But they just burnt down in the Camp Fire “

Jim Reel and Tom Woods will both take care of your needs, however from what I can tell the shaft you listed looks to be priced about right. If they are local I would probably go with them.

I am looking a salvage yard shafts with old u-joints for $115. It cost more to rebuild $250-$300 than the salvage yard. I think I could get new U-joints + salvage shaft for under $150 total.

Just make sure if you are ordered it sight unseen that it is a double carden or you will need to index your axle to work with the non-cv style shaft.

3 spicer 1350x and a Neapco CV joint ball (can't get a Spicer one anymore) cost me almost 95.00 in parts alone, plus my time to install everything......
