Thanks!

I’d leave the filter and just replace the 12 qts.

This chart says it is good to -15. I go with "don't waste your money and change it at next interval."

I'd be plugging in the block heater. It'll start much easier and your engine will love you for it.

LOL I would go with the Ford Chart. Who knows what went into the testing of this one.

That generic SAE chart states -15C (+5dF) not -15dF for 15W40. That’s a big difference.

The Ford Owner’s manual shows -7C = +20dF

I would go with the Ford engineers recommendations for their Diesel engine, not a generic table.

I bought Shell Rotella 15w40. Not gonna chance it. Got Rotella 5w40 on the way with new oil filter.

Thanks for all the replies! ;p I definitely stirred the pot with this one...

Is the real issue that during cold startup, cold temps mean thicker oil which means less lubrication? As soon as the trucks heats up a bit, does it make a difference? Yes, I know you then have to wait for a min or two to heat the engine up, but is a cold start up the real issue? Educate me.

Good news. Rotella has rebates on T5 15W40 and T6 5W40.
Online rebate link follows:
https://rotella.shell.com/en_us/coup...Rpb25hbDE4Lw==
I bought 4ea 3 gallon boxes of T6 from Sams Club and got $84 in rebates. 4 x $21.
You can file the rebate form online and upload receipts online. Just make sure that the receipt has the retailer name, product, date purchased and cost.

And the rebate turn around time is just a couple of weeks!

As to the real issue on cold startups, yes the oil will be thicker, but once warmed up the oil would be fine.

15-40 oil

I live in central Ontario, Canada. I have run Rotella 15-40 in diesel pickups for over 30 years in all sorts of weather. We do get very cold weather. I routinely run 600,00 km or more and have had no problems. I do not start in cold weather and then put the pedal down right away. Give the engine a couple of minutes for fluids to warm up. No problem.
