Hi,

I bought an F100 short-bed from 1965 last year. The truck was imported to Germany a few years before and it seems, that I'm the third owner in Germany. I'm about to pull out the engine, due to oil consumption and oil leaking. The engine will be rebuild. By removing all things and working close to the engine I recognized, that the mounting of the engine looks a little bit strange. It seems, that there has been some modifications made to the mounting position and that might not be the original 352 engine. But I can't find detailed pictures of the mounted engines in this trucks, so maybe the experts here can give me some advice. What I can say is, that there have been made modifications to the shifting. It was build with column shifting, but now has floor shifting (3 speed manual).

The mounting of the engine seems stock to me. The heads on that engine are not stock to that truck since they have a C8AE-H casting on them, which implies first used in 1968. You can find similar casting numbers on the engine typically that can at least help ID if the engine is from the correct year ranges.

thanks a lot. Well this are good news. I was a little bit confused, because of the engine mounting and thought of heavy problems. I think the engine is quite a little "best of" set up (or et least best of available parts set up). I will check out all numbers, once the engine is out of the car and post them here. I really love this truck, as it is my first truck and my first V8. I really hope to bring it back to perfect shape.

That center crossmember in the first picture doesn't look stock. But it could have been modified for clearance on the headers.

 

 

Powered by Ford valve covers introduced in 1967, the vertical oil filter adapter is from a car.

Edit: The intake manifold with the oil fill tube is from a 1958/64 car.

Edit: Since these FE engines were only installed in cars, the bolt pattern on the block where the rubber insulators bolt on, is different than 1965/76 FE engines.

Edit: In order to use FE truck rubber insulators on 1958/64 FE engines, R/L brackets have to be made up to install them.

Edit: Suggest looking for the engine block casting number and casting date code. Even though the C8AE-H heads are from a 1968/71 360/390, what is the block from?

Those mounts and crossmember match what I have (on visual inspection) on my '66 with the same 352 Ford Edsel block. I know that mine is the original from the factory as the vehicle has been in family for most of its life.

Hey, thank you very much for all the great information. I will check all the numbers on the whole engine, after it is taken out. This will be done next Saturday. It will be a big help to get information about the engine, because we will need some spare parts, I think.

I was trying to see what else I could tell you from the picture, but most of it you probably already can tell:
- Headers put in to replace Exhaust Manifolds
- Harmonic Balancer replaced with a multi-belt serpentine pully, probably for an A/C system.
- From the factory these only had one Positive Crankcase Ventilation valves (PCV) on the valve covers and it was on the passenger side.
- What's the fuel pump situation? Was it replaced with an electronic or is it still running the mechanical?

Other than those, everything looks original or in very good nick. How clean was it when you got it (looks like you've been cleaning it). I'm just breaking mine down and I've had lots of oil blown out of mine in the 50 years since it was new. Currently replacing all gaskets and seals on mine along with the water pump, Harmonic Balancer, points, and maybe the fuel pump (still deciding).

 

Thank you for the information. The fuel pump is still a mechanical one. I will replace it with a new mechanical one, while the engine will be rebuilt. I cleaned the valve covers and gave the some fresh paint. That was some time ago. While the engine is leaking oil and blowing out of the exhaust like hell, the engine will be rebuilt. So I plan to pull out the engine next Saturday. After that, I will clean the engine bay (removing old paint, removing rust, some welding here and there and some fresh paint. This will be done, while the engine is rebuild by a friend of mine (professional engine expert). I hope to get it up and running on the road again, by March next year. So it will become a project for the long cold winter days and winter nights.

Joachim, there's a bunch of Ford V8 guys in Germany. Theo's a motorhead and all-round genius living in Potsdam, or he used to. He's no longer around the FE forums but I think he runs the MEL engine forum. He might have parts or know how to find them locally. Good luck!

Hey Jo, ... I also just bought a 65 F100 SWB with a 352FE. Still in SoCal awaiting a bunch of parts. Will be shipped to Germany in a few weeks.
