That is a really nice clean looking truck, nice job!

A nice blend of upgrades , while maintaining the vintage charm.

Congratulations on a great build.

Thank you!

Got the wood done today. Not a kit. Just some red oak from Home Depot and some semi gloss spar.

Very nice! For several years now I've been thinking about putting sideboards or racks on my 54 F100. I've been collecting pictures of trucks with various types, sizes and shapes of racks. And yours are what I would want mine to look like. I like how the ends of the boards are rounded off.

A couple of questions:
1. how many coats of spar varnish?
2. Are the boards 1x3 nominal?
3. How long are the stakes in front and rear pockets?
4. Do the stakes wedge in the pockets to hold the boards off the flare or are they long enough to sit in the bottom of the stake pocket?

* I rounded the ends to try and mimic the shape of the rear fenders.

A couple of questions:
1. how many coats of spar varnish?

* 5. but I think I'm gonna wish I did more

2. Are the boards 1x3 nominal?

* 1x3 for the rails and 2x2 for the stakes

3. How long are the stakes in front and rear pockets?

* The stakes only go into the pockets 12." I'd go further if I were to do it again.

4. Do the stakes wedge in the pockets to hold the boards off the flare or are they long enough to sit in the bottom of the stake pocket?

* The front rails lie on the front panel. I used some leftover rubber (between) to try and protect the paint. I plan to add a shim to the side of the stakes to keep the side-to-side movement down. Front to rear movement should be nil, since I cut the rails long enough to put some pressure against the stakes.
Overall, I'm a little skeptical on how this will stand up. But it only cost me about $400 for everything. I can easily replace something that isn't panning out.

Just a little thought on wood species. I've restored two wooden boats from the 1930's, and red oak is never used because of its low resistance to decay. When weight isn't a concern and strength is required--white oak is the choice.

Jim

P.S. Your side boards look great, wdglide!
