Changed Fuel and Air Filters. Now truck constantly smokes...

Hi all,

I have a 2004 F350 Super Duty with the 6.0.
The previous owner put in a K&N Air filter because they can be supposedly washed and never buy one again. Well I proved that to be wrong.

The truck choked out finally. I replaced the Air Filter and both Fuel Filters and drained the water/fuel separator line.

Truck runs great but now it smokes all of the time even at idle and NEVER did before.

I am assuming that the computer has the Fuel/Air all screwed up from lack of or no air flow. I disconnected the batteries hoping to reset the computer to the Factory Air/Fuel mix.

Any suggestions to fix this? The truck NEVER smoked one bit before this and it runs great with the new air and fuel filters.
Thanks all for your help and ideas.

Tune? If you are referring to the aftermarket device that you can tune, adjust and read then no. If it had one I would be messing with that to adjust without trying to reset the computer by unplugging the batteries. Thanks for the question and have a great day.

Can you explain what happened when it “choked out”?

It was gradual. It was slowly losing power like it was struggling for fuel. Turned out to be starving for air because the Air Filter did not clean like K&N claims. Then it eventually stalled before I could make it home. Removed he air filter and it started right back up. Changed to a brand new Air Filter and Put in 2 new fuel filters while I was at it.

Now it runs like it always has, which is excellent. The difference is that it smokes when it has never done this in all he years I have had the truck.

Guessing it has a MAF sensor, I would take it out and spray the heck out of the element with brake cleaner. Make sure there still is an element between the 2 poles. If that doesn't work, the MAF sensor would be the 1st thing I replaced.

Wasn't that one of the problems with using a K&N on these trucks? It seems like I remember reading somewhere that the oil stuff you treat them with can cause problems with the MAF sensor.

IDK. They are supposedly washable and I saw nothing that told me to coat the air filter with oil. I discarded the old one ad bought a new air filter. I will be pulling the MAF this morning and check it out. Might be like that because of the dirty air filter and it stopped running from no air. Ran it without a filter as part of the diagnosis process. Could have happened then as well.

cleaned the MAF and put it back in. Was good for a.minute and then it seemed as then a puff of grey smoke and right back to black and grey smoke. I ordered a new MAF but not sure what else it could be.

Do you have a tool to read codes or sensor outputs? That would be useful.

If you ran a K&N very long without oiling it you may have smoked the engine. How long did you run it without oiling it?

the new filter is a nice pinkish red color that indicates the red oil that was used on he filter from the factory.

I do not
just have a personal one that reads when the check.wngine light is on. I asked my companies fleet mechanics if they have a professional scanner and if they will check it out for me.

There are some inexpensive phone apps that work well. Just need an OBD wireless adapter. Forscan is a good one. Total costs maybe $35
