The Merrimack river that runs from NH through MA to the ocean was once one of the dirtiest..
The mills used to dump all kinds of crap.. They are still fishing vehicles , tires and a ton of other crap out regularly

When we were boating when I was a kid dad pitched all of his empty beer cans in the water. A lot of rusting cans on the bottom.

Most all of the pollution is runoff of chemicals from the farmers fields into the river.

They say the Mississippi River has passed through the human gut 4 times by the time it gets to Batten Rouge Louisiana.
The Illinois feeds into the Mississippi River near St.Louis.
