477 Cubic inch Engine oil recommendations
Hello all,
I am new to the forum so please forgive me if I’m not searching/navigating properly. I have a 1980 Ford L900 with a 477 cubic inch gasoline engine. I am having a great deal of difficulty in determining the recommended oil viscosity and capacity for this engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to FTE.
You are in the correct forum for the 477.
Try as I might going through several threads here, I can't find the info you seek.
Is there anything to indicate what oil was being used in it? If so, stick with that. Otherwise, I would go with 20w-50, or maybe the Shell Rotella 15w-40 oil sold for diesels.
Capacity--again, can't find it. Start at 6 quarts and work your way up the dipstick.

Thank you for your efforts
Thank you for your efforts, I just purchased the truck from the wife of last owner who unfortunately is deceased. I was able to find that with an filter change it takes 10 quarts but for a million dollars I can’t find what viscosity lol. Thank you again for your attempts!

My Dad had 2 T-850's with 477's and 2 T-950's with 534's. We always used 15w-40 in the gas and diesel motors (except the one Detroit 8V-71 we had...that was SAE 30). From the time I was a very young boy I was working around those trucks....and they all lasted a very very long time. You won't go wrong using the Rotella 15w-40.
