Towing with a R4 trans

How much can you haul before you have to switch into tow haul mode? Seams like it is screaming at 65 with it in 3r/tow mode. Also what happens if you o tow over the limit for OD? Can the trans be made to handle it?

Assuming you mean a 4R100, I don't think they ever offered a tow/haul mode. It won't let you tow over any kind of limit in OD, if there's enough load it will just downshift. I've towed 13k in OD, but it'll only engage on relatively flat land. As soon as a hill comes it'll downshift. I generally predict as I'm approaching a hill and downshift it manually rather than waiting for it to happen. If you have a tuner it'll probably allow more load being applied before downshifting than a stocker.

As noted above the 4r100 doesn’t have a tow haul mode. The button on the stick is a overdrive off switch which you only need to use to hold 3rd gear if the trans is hunting 3-4, usually happens in rolling hills or slight incline depending on the load.
ypu can use it to hold speed down large grades as well.

Biggest concern with 4r100 is don’t overheat it. The 6.0 cooler swap does a great job.
also don’t back up until the fluid cools down after running at temps as it cools the pump seal.

perfect example is hard pull into the mountains with a camp trailer, and then back into a camp spot when the trans is still hot. You’ll puke fluids put of the pump seal every time. Let the trans cool down to 140-150or so before backing into your spot.

Use 4low when backing a load (if applicable) any time you can, especially backing up an incline.

I used to use 4 low (hubs unlocked) for tight trailer maneuvering, it was an awesome advantage with a 13k lb boat having to be pushed up a driveway ramp and around tight spots.
